Advancing the Timing, Yay or Nay?
Are there any benefits/gains in advancing the timing on the Z? I have a friend with a G35c that said he did that to his car and he can feel the gain. I don't see why it would make more horsepower, and I have yet to read anything regarding that in here so I was wondering if anyone could input on this issue.
Thanks in advance.

A lot of QR25 guys used to do it in the Sentra world and had a better response in the midrange. I have yet to try it on the Z though. And now that I'm turbo I wont be even thinking about that...

Im not 100% positive, but with my Technosquare reflash Im pretty sure that they advanced in certain areas of the powerband, iirc they said it helps with midrange tq-I gained 12 wft/lbs with the ecu.

Please make sure you are running good gas when you advance the timing. By doing so, you will notice an increase in tq and response but do not over do it because it will overheat your motor and then ping ping/knock knock.

I don't have any idea how much HP and Tq you could safely pick-up, and whether it would be worth your time, trouble, and expense. The engine is probably tuned --by the factory-- conservatively for timing and A/F ratio to keep the engine safe in a very wide range of operating conditions. Reliability and durability are dominant themes.
Theoretically, gains could be made by adjusting both A/F ratio and timing to a more aggressive state of tune. But some aftermarket bolt-ons lean-out the A/F ratio. Maybe you only have 91 octane gas in your area. Maybe it gets real hot where you live in the summer. Maybe you like to drive around at WOT with a car-load of people and a trunk-load of cargo. Advancing timing on your car could induce knock/detonation, which could be bad enough to induce pre-ignition, which could destroy your engine in half a second.
If you want to advance timing, it's a complex matter that must be addressed on a dyno by a competent tuner. TS might be able to assist, but you'd be buying a canned program from afar. I guess you could visit their facility for a personalized tune... Otherwise, a good tuner in your area might could help.
