I wonder if there would be higher gains with the resonator removed as well as adding a downpipe (y-pipe). Should give roughly 8-10hp throughout the band, and may give it a deeper sound... anyone done this?

 

I'm gonna have the exhaust guy look at a custom downpipe on thursday when I get the flowmaster

by custom, i mean one for another car, not custom built. I see no reason why a rustang or camaro one wouldn't work.

 

The stock Y pipe has 2 silver netting type things not sure what they are for, like flexible braided steel so I left it as is.

But if gains can be proven it will be my next mod to replace the Y-Pipe.

 

somebody needs to find a Y pipe replacement and dyno that. cause i really want get some exhaust work done before i go broke trying to by DVD moniters

 

has anyone tried just doing some thing like a bolt-on, instead of welding the straight pipe on? that way if you don't like it, you can simply bolt the silencer back on

The main issue would be spacing and size. The other thing is that y-pipes can be optimized for their specific application. This might mean a less than optimum application for us. Keep us posted.

Isn't that a catalytic converter in the y-pipe? That may make it a little more difficult to find someone to do a custom piece.

A bolt in replacement would have to be pretty involved. The pipe that contains the premuffler connects the y-pipe to the muffler and is fairly long and has numerous bends. The custom piece would be a good deal more expensive.

The two flexible braided steel pieces are called flex pipes. They are there because when the engine is under compression, it moves and then returns to position once compression is released. If the pipes were solid, they would stress and eventually crack after a period of time. They are exactly as you described, braided steel pipes allowing for movement without leaking exhaust.

 

I knew they were there for a reason and was advised by my muffler guy to keep it stock. Makes sense to me.

I may eventually go with some high flow cats but everything else seems copesetic. I am *sure* I gained some HP. My mpg definately improved by about 30 gallons per tank.

Hopefully by spring when the track conditions are perfect I will have that AEM Version 2 CAI and a Chip and I can hit the track
(the true test of where your car is at power wise!)

Dyno numbers are good but I prefer track numbers instead!!!
