I have an '06 z with only 3k miles on it and noticed that I have a small ticking sound at idle (once per revolution). Anyone have this problem? I can't hear it above the engine with the hood open, only really on the drivers side.

 

Yea I have had the same thing always and mine is 03 model, think it is normal just like the loud clutch noise I have to go with it.

Once per rev, isn't that over 15X per sec. how can you hear that as being a ticking? My exhaust makes a ticking sound after a spirited drive.

 

If it's a rapid clicking noise that you can only hear at low-medium revs, but the speed increases as you raise the revs, then it might be low oil.

 

sounds like some valve tap to me... nothing that uncommon...

Yes, but valve tap with only 3k miles? To me, it seems like an exhaust leak since i can only hear it at the driver's side, not on top of the hood. If it was an injector, wouldn't it be coming from the top? There are many clicks per revolution from the top of the engine, which I have heard in every Z. Oil level is fine.

 

It's the injectors. VQ injectors are very loud. Take a long screw driver and place one end on the injector housing and one end up to your ear. You'll clearly hear the ticking.

 

What does the injectors sound like? Do they tick maybe 2 times per second? Does it coinside with the regular rotational sound coming fro the engine? This is the sound I am getting. You can hear it when the engine warms up and idles down. Not sure if it's because the RPM or the just the engine is hot that the sound occurs. Took it to a dealship we listened to another 06 Z and it was missing the "extra tap" noise at idle. It may be because the engine wasn't warm yet.
