i'm still under warranty. just wondering... what does it take to get a new tranny occassionally grinding in 3rd? a lot of people posted this problem who are still on their first tranny. Mine grinds when its cold like some others have mentioned. will they replace it because of these problems or would it have to be something more fcuked?

Seems like most people just arent friendly enough to these trans. Mine is about to hit 87k miles on the original trans and clutch. The scary thing is that it never grinds at all and actually grabs third gear hard enough to kick the rear out a bit. I cant believe it. hehe

Well, they wouldn't be on version NINE of something if it was well built the first time.

52K, grinds 3rd when cold.
My brother has 04.5 and it is like night and day compare my 03.
When you put my car in gears, it has alittle effort, then falls into place.
My brother car on the other hand is like cutting butter.

What do you mean "starting to" run out for 03's? It's 3 years OR 36k miles, whichever comes first. Those 3 years expired a long time ago.

Don't bother buying the extended warranty for your Z. I did that and spent a few weeks going round and round with Nissan about fixing my trans and it was just barely past the original warranty and into the extended. I think I had 60,100 miles on it when I went in to get it fixed. The dealership spent 3 days talking to the main Nissan branch and then I spent quite some time afterwards. And every time I called, I spoke with someone that had a horribly thick accent which I could hardly understand. To top it off they were rude and in the end said that my clutch caused my transmission to go bad because of abuse. I never abused the Z because it had a grind in it when I originally purchased it. I was told that it was because I did not know how to drive a stick. Too bad I was not a member on here at that time.

42k orig trans and clutch

Going F/I in a few months, so I'm wondering if I should try to brick it before my warranty runs out. Probably not worth it since it's working just fine right now.

I'm about to hit 40K on my 03 Touring Z. I checked out this thread cause I heard some cluttering noise this morning after I started my Z. Found out it was normal due to the flywheel.

As for my Tranny, it just seems a bit notchy shifting into 3. I've had a couple of grinds on 4th actually... but those were pretty rare and not consistent. Hopefully I don't have to replace my tranny sometime soon. But I've accepted that I will eventually (hoping when its past the 100K mark).

My car is out of its warranty. So I read somewhere that it costs abot 1600 plus labor to replace it.

Does anyone know any good Nissan dealerships in the SF Bay Area that are willing to replace the tranny for free? ? It's a long shot, but I figured I'd ask.
