Assuming a 2003 350Z coupe with an automatic transmission, where are the weaknesses in the drivetrain and engine? What stock components can not viably handle 500hp?

Try searching some turbocharged engine builds for ideas.

The automatic transmission is probably good up to 350-400 horsepower, but don't quote me on that one.

 

Your tranny will not hold the power. Even with a valve body upgrade, I wouldn't push an auto passed 400 - even at 400, you could be asking for trouble

 

Well that said, SGP claims their VB will be good to about 550 whp.

That is a lot of power! I think the tranny will hold it - for awhile. If you keep the fluid cool and clean (tranny cooler and filter), you might get a reasonable service life from the stock tranny.

I decided not to take the risk and go ahead and do a full rebuild with new clutch packs, bands, etc. right from the get go...
