Some people don't know the difference between a flat tire and the alignment being off man. Many out there don't even know that the belts or whatever else needs to be replaced on a schedule. When he thought it was his tranny having a issue that is what he thought.

Anyway, the point is to not rely on your oil pressure gauge, as it is not an accurate measurement tool of oil volume, and to not rely on status lights. Usually if the oil light comes on, you've already done harm to your engine. Regularly check your fluids and don't depend on the car to grab you by the throat and tell you when it needs them.
Also, chances are that people who don't check their fluids probably won't even know what a "low oil" light means, or how serious it is (See all the posts about "I HAVE A ORANGE LIGHT WITH A ! IN IT WHAT DOES THIS MEAN BECAUSE I CANT RTFM).
