Default too much oil? what happens?

i think my last oil change they put too much oil. I recently started smelling a burning smell, so i naturally checked the engine oil level thinking it was low.
to my surprise, there was oil all over the dipstick.
so is this bad for the engine? or does it just burn away?

thanks my350.com

If there is too much oil the crank will stir up the oil so much that it may foam and cause problems. So not good, sounds like you caught it in time though.

Eventually it starts pouring out the drain plug. Found this out the hard way and most definitely not in the Z.

The oil tends to whip into a froth and will actually cause you to start burning oil, which sounds like that's what is happening in your case. Completely drain and refill. I'd take the time to do an long drain to get as much oil out as possible before refilling. And yes, it can cause damage.

How long after shutting the engine off did you check the level? While it's best to be safe, I'd check the level after the car had sat and see where it reads.

oh man, i am the dipstick. haha, i read the oil stick the wrong side.
the other side its right at the H, so the oil level is ok.
so then, what is this burning smell?
I have an 05 with 60k. could it be I recently changed to synthetic?

How recently did you have your oil changed? It could be a number of simple things, they spilt some oil on your motor and the residue is still burning off, same thing with the underside, maybe there is some old oil around your filter/plug that is burning off... and finally old burnt oil may have dripped onto the top of you undertray and is sitting there.

Uhh negative. So here's the story. About 4 years ago I had a neon. They were notoriously known for bad headgaskets. So of course you constantly burn and leak oil. So one day I decided to visit my gf so I checked the oil. The dipstick was bone dry so I added 5 or so quarts. Began driving and about 20 minutes into the drive there began to be a terrible smell of oil and a huge smoke cloud.

I continued to drive and a police officer pulls me over. Asks what the problem was and I told him I don't know. After a bit I open the hood and the smell of burnt oil covers the engine bay. Also all over the exhaust manifold was soaked with oil. So I climb back in and arrived at my girls house and checked under the car out of curiosity to see oil not rushing but leaking out the drain plug. The drain plug was tight.

Sorry for the double my ps3 has a size limit.

Anyway at my gf's house I did a drain and flush. I then poured the oil that was in the container into older bottles to return to autozone filled 7 quarts with the remaining oil. So basically all in all I read dipstick incorrectly.

Also don't put me on lawchick's level. I do not lie or make posts about things I do not know or not have experience with.

I was just kidding about the Lawchick comment as nobody is that bad.

When you pulled the dipstick, did you clean it, put it back in, and check the level again? Sounds like you just pulled the dipstick and oil was all over.
