the pumpkin carriers/housings are all the same - the differentials and ring and pinions are what differs between manuals and auto's.

an auto ring and pinion can only mate to an an auto differential (either stock or aftermarket) . The only aftermarket diffs I am aware of specifically for an auto are Quaife and Cusco FWIW.

A ring and pinion for a manual (3.9, 4.08, etc) can only mate to a differential for a manual transmission car (either stock (open or VLSD) or aftermarket

I'm curious to know if like in the 4x4 world you have diffs that are for certain R&P's?

For example does quaife make a 3.3 diff, 3.9 diff, & a 4.08 diff? All the same diffs but the quaife 3.3 diff wouldn't mate to the 4.08 R&P? Do I have that logic down?
If so this is making sense in my head now.

you have 2 types of differentials - ones for an auto, and one for manuals, they are not ring and pinion specific (well, I guess you could consider the auto one specific, as I am not aware of any other ratio for auto's except the stock 3.3).

I see.
So w/ the above mentioned, if I wanted to run 4.08 ring and pinion final drive for my 5AT transmission I'd need to get a manual transmisison FD housing aka pumpkin, a manual transmission quaife LSD, then the 4.08 gears would work w/ my 5AT?

I am an idiot. So, we may have to resort to pictures of stick figures.
Seems I will need to find a manual trans pumpkin/ FD housing before I can proceed to order 4.08 gears. Thanks so much for the help!

no, that is not the case at all - if you need a manual pumpkin, I would have told you you need a manual pumpkin through this thread and PM's

from post #21

"the pumpkin carriers/housings are all the same - the differentials and ring and pinions are what differs between manuals and auto's."

AKA - you can use your auto pumpkin, you will need a new diff and the ring and pinion and the associated install parts

I just got hard... In the pants. This is great news, thank you Z1. When I order from your site do I order the quaife LSD for an automatic or for a manual?

J.Dub

If you want to run the 4.08 gears, you have to get the Quaife for the manual.
But because you are replacing both the gears and the LSD unit you can install them
in your 5AT pumpkin.
The only difference between the auto and manual diff is the thickness of the ring gear/hense the thickness of the LSD mounting flange.
I think this should sum it up for you.
