Default High Pitch Noise from inside oil pan area.

Hey guys, I have a 2006 350z 6 speed with the car running I get a whine - high pitch noise from inside (or damn close to it) the oil pan. I thought it was a belt or tensioner... so I did the remove the belts and run the car thing and it’s still there so I jacked it up and got under and its centered on the oil pan.

Ideas?

It could be resonating from something else I guess, but I took the belts off and it was still there.

Could it be normal? Thinking no.. (my first Z)

Please help a guy out.

not my car but sounds like ths:

yup, no idea... When you start it its not there but if you goose the gass a few times it will start and stay until you shut it down.

if you removed the belts, I'd say its the oil pump...

Also:
Could this be related: (I know diff car but?)
He's probably talking about the VQ 3.5s. There is a Service Bulletin (NSB07-042) that addresses it, and there are a few threads on this board about it.

If a VQ is suffering from the Service Bulletin, it will be a very loud whine noise, as the cam-chain has worn down the tensioner block and the backside of the chain if rubbing on the metal plunger of the tensioner.

OK, I thought I would look at it agn...
my steps:

1. Start car cold... oil pressure is on like 80 - no noise
2. As car warms the oil pressure drops to like 60 ish and I can make the noise happen if I rev the motor a bit, but if I let it go to idle it stops.
3. Car warm oil gauge shows less than 60 and wine is there nonstop. I look under and the sounds is the loudest from the oil pan area.

The oil gauge will go up when you give it gas but when its warm it sits at less than 60 - Normal?

Its killing me...

Tried:
Removed the belts
turned off AC
Clutch in and out

For the heck of it I went out and picked up 5 Qts of Castrol Edge 5W30, and a WIX filter...

I haven’t started it yet... I know it was a waste of 50.00... But the oil I drained out was the blackest oil I have seen in a long time for sure.

More later when I have a sec to go out and let it run so I can see if the noise comes back... Which it will I am sure.

Next trip is to the dealer for a diagnosis... Or should I take it to a local tuner or something like that?

OK... so now I am really confused.

As you see above I changed the oil... and I then started the test.

I started the car and did not give it gas. I let it run for 35-40 min at idle. The Oil Pressure started off at like 80 and when warm it was at the 1/4 mark or a little less... I could at this point in the past rev the motor and get the noise to start. So I did that, I revved it up a few times, and no noise, I kept it at 2 -3K for a few seconds and no noise... I gassed it a few more times and shut it off... I restarted it and same thing - No Noise? Can it be that I was low on oil? could the filter have been clogged? I just don’t know.

I am not 100% sure its fixed, however this is the first time I have ever not heard the noise. I need to put the parts back on it and drive it for a bit to get the real results.

Anyone ever had really low oil in their car? Did it buzz or make a whining noise at the oil pan?

I hope it is OK... I have never seen anything like this and my luck usually turns out for the worst case situation - so I am guessing it’s still there... I will drive it later tomorrow or Tuesday and let you know.

fingers crossed.

do you still happen to have the old oil? if so run your fingers thru it and rub together and see if they are any metal flakes. also it is possible running it low or it just being very old was keeping it from keeping the chain tensioner tight.

I do have the old oil I my catch can but it mixed with a little bit of whatever was already in there... So it might not be a reliable source (however I will filter it out to see if anything is there). I will not have time tonight to run the car, but I will put the wheels back on in the morning and let you know... I hope its fixed?

It might be better to cut the old filter apart to see what's inside. It's common practice in servicing aircraft engines to check for metal caught in the filters. They even make special tools for getting the top off the filter easily:

Well, I wish I had thought of that... the oil filter is gone as of this morning (trash day). I put all the parts back on... I also replaced the belts (brown and cracked). I started it up and let it idle for 30 min, then I went out and gassed it a few times (0-2K then 0-4K) then let it idle... no noise. I am on my way out for the afternoon but when I get back I will take it for a drive and let you guys know... I am hopeful only because before it would start making the noise after about 10 min.

I did pull my oil catch can out and looked at the top (it’s the type that is like a big pan) thoughts are if metal flake was in the oil it would have been also visible on top of the pan area where the oil was pouring onto while I changed it. I could see nothing... However I think the real test would have been to cut the filter open and inspect... I will do that next oil change.

I can’t see how fresh oil would stop the noise, could have been low because I can’t read the dipstick for anything however thoughts are if it was super low I would of had a low oil light.

That oil that I changed was the blackest oil I honestly have ever seen... But I don’t see how dirty oil would cause a buzzing noise in the pan, so I just don’t know....

Final test will be my drive this evening... thanks for your help guys... it’s nice to know that people out there still have time to offer thoughts and ideas.

I will post back tonight.

I drove the car for about 45 min, both hard and normal... No noise (whine, buzz or any other uncommon).

So was it low oil? Or bad oil? I don’t know... I am just happy it sounds normal... I will post back after a tank of gas for final word...

thanks all for your support.

06's have notorious for consuming oil. i would keep my eye on the oil levels frequently. i would make sure you to change the oil every 2500 miles. use a thicker oil like a castrol syntec 0w30 european oil found at autozone. make sure you use a good quality filter, mobile 1, k&n or napa gold.
