For about the last 2000 miles, my oil pressure gauge has been maxed out. I swapped the oil shortly after it started happening. I'm running Mobil 1 now. Any idea what could be causing this besides a broken gauge/sending unit? There are no other symptoms. I have since been autocrossing with no problems. Engine speed doesn't seem to make any difference, and the oil level is fine.

It's a 2003 with about 39,000 miles.

 

Here's a pic. Not that you should need it. Has anyone else heard of this problem?

 

Looks like a broken sender or gauge. If you track your car, I recommend aftermarket gauges/sending unit. The OEM units are prone to error/failure.

 

My 2007 350Z came new from the dealer with my oil guage 'pinned' like the OP's. As stated, it was a problem with the sensor wiring. Nothing to do with Mobile 1 oil.

 

Did you get it fixed?

 

Stuff like this makes me really curious.

You have this really nice car, and the engine oil pressure runs along in the normal range for however long you've had the car, then goes completely nutso, and you KEEP DRIVING IT FOR 2000 MILES before thinking that something might be wrong that you should do something about.

I'm not only curious, I'm absolutely AMAZED.

 

Well, there were no other problems/symptoms. No sense in being an alarmist. I had replaced the filter again, and the oil seemed to be flowing properly, so I assumed it was the gauge or sender. As you see above, my inclination was correct.

 

But the outcome could have been VERY expensive if the bad sender had hidden a real problem with the oil system. The bad sender also sends erroneous info to the warning light, so you would have had no warning of impending doom.

But, as my wife says, the worst thing that can happen almost always doesn't.

 

Try hitting the gauge, no joke... thats what works for me. If it gets pegged I just tap the top of it and it falls to where it should.

 

Faulty oil pressure sending unit is a common problem. Replace it.

 

Only works though if you're this guy...
