Default Open diff to Stock VLSD or Aftermarket

I have a base model 08 and i really would like to get some LSD. I dont really drag race, more drifting and some autocross.

Here is my delema, i wouldnt mind settling for a cheap used VLSD in lieu of an expensive clutchtype like a nismo (most likely what im aiming for if i go this route).

Initially VLSD is cheaper and less maintenance, but who here slides with VLSD? I have never drifted with a viscous diff before, but i am willing to bet anything is better than my open diff gheyfest...

I have a clutch type in my 510, and its nice to have consistent lock-up, i have heard that VLSD is rather unpredictable, but for a good price (300-400 used) i figured it would be better than nothing...

Any opinions are appreciated

Spend the money for a clutch type, its worth it. VLSD is a waste of time.

^ I agree with terrasmack!

Im a drifter and I autocross..........

when i first started out drifting I though I could get away with using the VLSD........WRONG! its pointless........the viscous fluid cant hold up after the first initial entry drifting...once weight gets transfered your back to open diff......the fluid shears and nothing works in your favor...

I have a nismo diff clutch plate style set at 2 way and its perfect for drifting, a bit aggressive for autoX, so if you are looking to do both, set whichever one you get at 1.5 and enjoy...

also, any money spent ""(300-400 used)"" is a waste of money and time...

not to mention by the time you're done with the instal, and the required bearings, it's just not worth the price of admission. The stock VLSD has minimal lockup when brand new, and it only goes down from there. Drifting will likely kill it awfully quickly

^ it will.........i considered my VLSD 'open' after 30K......

"Fair" upgrade if you bought a used base model Z and want a VLSD becuase you have a daily driven Z that sees rain, etc at times..especially since base models have no electronic VDC, etc..

Sorry to thread jack, what would a nismo lsd run roughly? and what type of maintenance is necessarily required? Also, does it affect daily drivability at all in a bad way? Thanks

^ Search for the going prices on clutch type lsd's.........they are all usually running about 1000 bucks....

clutch style diffs require oil changes usually every 5-8k miles or so. I use motul 90PA so its about 18 bucks every time i do it.

the nismo in particular:
is loud, clunky, popping, inside tire squeal......and sounds like pure win!

lil bishes hate it...

clutch style diffs will sound like that, but the nismo in general is much louder than any others i have heard, driven, etc...

with a true lsd...you will have to learn to drive the car all over again when it comes to acceleration and on turns..

you would definitely ruin a VLSD with a quickness if you drift with any regularity.

also as far as performance goes there is no comparison between a good aftermarket LSD and the stock VLSD. the stock VLSD is but a minor upgrade over the stock open diff, a good aftermarket LSD is light years beyond the VLSD.
