Default 07/08 HR Engine Swap in a 2004

Hey there. I have an 04 Nissan 350z, and as of right now, I'm needing to engine swap it. I've decided that I want to go with the 07/08 VQ35HR. I've just got some questions regarding putting an HR in a car that was built with/for a DE. My first question is: What is all required/necessary for me to swap an HR into it? And my second question being: Would I need a new transmission? I'm not sure if the "newer" 350z's use the same manual transmission as the older models. These are probably very basic questions, but I don't know so I figured I'd ask. Thanks.

Been done a couple times, you will need way more than you think. Just replace with the same motor

Here's a recent thread asking about JUST the front clip:

https://my350z.com/forum/2003-2009-n...5-06-09-a.html

Now, the engine.... new front rad support, new harness, new computer, new transmission, new clutch/flywheel/CSC, new hood....

Any more questions?

Don’t you need to get a new hood? Isn’t the HR profile much bigger than the DE?

I’m ganna go with Trav IIRC there is a crap ton of stuff you’re ganna have to do to make the swap happen.

Not a rumor. The HR starter mounts on the opposite side of the block from a DE. That's why you need the HR steering rack, as well as most of the parts from the front clip.

another HR swap thread? Why do something that is such a pain for so little gain? I am sure that with all the time and cost involved you could just rebuild your engine and throw some cams in it.

I wouldn't know because I'm not on FB, but I do hear way too many HR fan boys screaming out there. To which I say MEH, either way you look at it you wont make any substantial amount of power without FI. Either engine will need a proper build at that point unless you want to roll the dice lol.

Better off camming your DE. OR, selling the car altogether and buying an HR car.

Default Bit late to the party.

I have an auto 2003 350z, the engine blew. Whoopee.

I have a manual 2008 350z available, besides the gearbox, to purchase right now (wrecked, got in an accident but engine bay is completely fine, repairable write off.)

will having an entire donor car besides gearbox make this swap much less of a headache? Could I simply play lego and rip EVERYTHING out of one car and put everything from the HR into my 03? I'd like to keep it auto, it's a street car and heavy traffic where I've. Not looking for smart *** comments, simply need an accurate response if possible as I'm on a small time frame to decide whether or not I buy the car.
Money isn't a massive issue, but is there anything else I'd need if I have the entire car?

cheers in advance.

The advice above still stands. It's not worth the huge amount of effort for such minor gains. Get another DE and throw a few (more?) mods on it.

Having the HR drivetrain is one thing, but you'll have to move over your entire HR harness and ECU, which I assume means several of your 2003 control modules won't work (easily/at all) and all your mounting points (engine, trans, steering rack) are different.

If it was a bare track car and fun project for you then go for it.

To answer your question directly:
it would make it an easier swap, but your trans isn't compatible so you would NEED to convert to a manual if you want to use that car as a donor.

So can't use any sort of adaptor plate?
