I posted a simple how to on how to tighten the ball joint on the mirror. It actually is a very simple thing, just use the allen key they gave you. Here is the link.

And unless you actually have a defective mirror or part, there is no reason to modify anything or use glue, etc. Properly set up the mirror should work like any other. Just understand the principals involved - the lenght of the inner threaded rod, how it pushes on the ball joint, etc. I guess that to save us $400 they cut out the guy who makes sure that every mirror has the rod tightened exactly right.

Thanks gringott, maybe the Autotecknic isn't an inferior product after all.

Edit-Can't wait to get mine!

those ball stud joints are universal products.

the only thing autotecknic should be knocked for would be the way they poured the aluminum base and the cf mirror housing construction....

everything else, i bet would be the same pieces used by craftsquare since they're just normal hardware you can purchase from a catalog somewhere..

Yes my base has some pinholes that could have been filled. But for this price on a piece that is basically a fashion statement - on for a season or so...I am quite happy. And I see what you mean about the top washer Cheston - the curve of the mirror housing leaves a small gap at the leading edge. I think a minute or two with my dremel will make that washer fit just right...

Good write up, and like I said in that thread, if you tighten it enough then you shouldn't have any problems.

Since most of the people who buys this mirror are putting it on themselves, I guess it wouldn't hurt to tighten the joint before installing!

update.

i took my mirrors off to paint and to double check the stem length.

the stem is actually threaded about 3/4" deep, however, it is solid at the bend and not hollow, therefore you are limited to no more than 1/4" lowering/cutting off the top of the stem to reduce the height of the mirror and not have the bottom of the CF mirror interfere with the bend in the stem.

the base has some pits (due to the casting process) and can be filled using a slight application of bondo and doing a 250 grit sand, followed by a couple of passes of primer and a 400 wet sand..

i'll post picts of semi-gloss black paint when i'm completed..

Hello,

PM me your info plez. I'm assuming that you ordered black cf, as they have been on b/o for a minute now. Alan ordered silver cf, which we had 3 in stock. As far as the b/o being filled on the black cf, we were advised that they're on their way to us, and we should see 'em any day now. D.
