Default Who has an engine start button wired in?

Searched around and have found very little, especially recent. I'd like to see pics of installs and hear impressions of the mod from owners. Found a thread with some pics of a custom center console with one by member Phatmitzu (I think); PM'd him asking for info., but got no response. Hoping there are others out there that can chime in.

Been thinking about doing this (just as an "Oooo... cool." mod). I've done enough research to know how it's done and what is needed; I just really wanna see pics and get opinions on mounting locations. I'll likely wire in a hidden switch to the starter wire from the key so I can make it be able to start only by pressing the button or flip the switch and have the key work as normal for servicings, valet, etc.

Oh, and we can skip the whole "if you still have to have a key and turn it to the "on" position, what's the point of having the extra step of a start button?" debate. Even an Enzo works that way, after all, and I'm not interested in the electronic techno-keyless start deal.

Anyone?

Here are the pics I've seen:

I like this location; I'm just concerned that the button may not sit flush on an otherwise stock center dash piece b/c that area is somewhat curved. Since the piece in the pic is painted, there could easily have been a little molding done around the button to make it sit perfectly. Any thoughts?

Its an over rated pain in the *** if you ask me. Why add the extra step of pushing that button? Just put the key in and turn it. How hard is that?

(Sorry to be so negative, it just dont make sense for daily driving).

You're absolutely right; is is an extra unneccesary step, but it's cool! Would you complain about how much of a PITA is was to start your Enzo every time you got in b/c of it? I think not (and I haven't heard any S2k owners complaining about it for daily driving), but to each their own, right?

It's just something to personalize and add uniqueness to the car. When I start the car, I always puse a few seconds after turning the key to the "on" position to let the fuel pump fully prime and allow the car to complete it's self-check and the dash lights go out before I turn it to start anyway, so it wouldn't be the least bit of hassle for me just to drop my hand to the button during that time.

Will do. I've done plenty of research and I'll post up the links to some threads I found here for those that want to read more. I've also found some NSX owners that have done it in their cars. The required parts are easy to obtain (there's even a seller on Ebay that sells complete kits with a genuine S2k button (there are other buttons out there as well) and relay and pre-wired connectors and wiring diagrams.

The only things I need to do are get under my dash (waiting for cooler weather) and see how easy/difficult it is to access the ignition wiring, and finalize the mounting location. As I said, I really want to use the location shown in the pic above, but need to figure out how to make the install look perfect on that curved surface.

Here are the threads I've found here:
https://my350z.com/forum/audio-and-video/178376-push-button-start.html
https://my350z.com/forum/exterior-and-interior/99279-push-botton-start.html
https://my350z.com/forum/2003-2009-nissan-350z/99029-push-button-start.html

I have other links from other car forums, but not sure if forum rules allow me to post them here.

You want a car that is a PIA to start, try the Prius out.

It took the Wife and I 5 Minutes to figure out how to start it.

You push the Key-fob in the Dash. There is a "Power" Button. If you push it, everything comes on but the car wont go in to gear. After thumbing through the manual we found that you have to hold the brake while pushing the Power Button to get the car to start.

Then there is this Joystick thingy on the dash to get it in gear. Over and Down and back is reverse, over and up and back is drive and you have to watch what you are doing at the same time on the guage pod thats 3 feet infront of you damn near on the hood.

The Radio, AC, Power System and ALL other functions are controlled on a Freeking Touch screen on the dash that you cant see in the sun shine.

Other than that, It was kinda cool..

We actually Passed on it, The Price was a bit high for what it was ($26.5K) and we figured we could get a sedan for 3-5K less with nearly as good a gas milage. (Civic, Jetta, Corolla, Yaris), couple that with not having a 4K battery maint at 80-100K and it was a no brainer to pass it up for us.

Probably the same place I'm looking to put one in my '03. See the pics in post #2 above. I don't think the '06 center stack has changed so much that that location wouldn't work.

Wouldn't this eliminate the chip in the key?

Before buying the Z, I test drove the s2k and loved the push button start. I too am a wow-factor, fun mod, kind of guy. I would be very interested in how this would all work out as well.

No, you still have to insert the key and turn it to the second position, then press the start button. It is up to you whether or not you want to cut the ignition wire from position 3 on the ignition switch (i.e. still be able to start the car with the key or make it button only. I'm probably going to wire in a switch.).

There are those that consider it a useless mod (I suppose it is, albeit a really cool one) and those that say it's stupid if you still have to put the key in (i.e. proponents of all electronic keyless start systems), but this is exactly the way the S2k and alot of exotics like the Enzo work (key to pos. 2, then button to start).

I have the kit lined up; I'm still just waiting for the time and cooler weather to check out the wiring and finalize a mounting location before I do the mod.

Actually, if you trust the chip to protect your car, you could eliminate the key tumbler all together. The key only needs to be nearby, it does not need to be physically attached to the car. Then add an Off On On switch next to your start button. You get in and sit down and turn on your car and push the button. As long as you have your key in your pocket, it should start.
To shut down, just flip the switch back off.
