Default Question:Taking apart the Z Tail light

Has anyone done this? or most importantly, if so, how do you do it? Is it the same as the headlights? I've heard it hard...please give me the scoop!

Are you talking about removing the light assembly or taking apart the assembly itself? If former, the above link should hellp. If you're thinking about taking the assembly apart (why? can you elaborate?), I wouldn't recommend it. Others have tried and failed:

I just wanted to experiment with the tail lights. I know the clearcorners guys open them up and mod them, but i just cant figure out how. Does anyone know if the aftermarket ones are easier to take apart? I really want to use the stock ones though. If anyone has any suggestions or has done this successfully let me know, please!

They will have to be cut open with a dremel and resealed. They doesn't use silicone-based glue like the headlights, so putting them in the oven won't do the trick.

In that case, I don't know the answer to your question. Best I can suggest it finding a used (maybe broken) assembly and experimenting with is. I do disticntly recall that 3-4 yrs ago one of the board members (I want to say "ares" or "Acree" but I'm not sure) took one apart by using the over method and modded it with LED emitters and then put it back together, but for the life of me I can't find the thread any more. Sorry.

Doing the same thing here. Where exactly did you cut? Do you have any pics of that? Trying to cut mine open and no idea where to start the cut.

I took mine apart (along with headlights & turn indicators) for weight reduction (1000% serious)… dropped about 15lbs between the six of them.

That makes sense. Every now and then I come across some old posts that make me laugh. Different times indeed.

As far as this post is concerned, if you look at how the back of the taillights were cut open, they are not sealed and definitely not airtight. If you do this, expect a lot of condensation and water to accumulate. I think some permaseal dissolving liquid would be the way to go or, if you must, cut open the housing where the red lens meets the black plastic backing so that you can seal everything back using butyl glue or something similar.

Default 350Z taillight separation for mods

Also needing some help on separating my 07 Z taillights. Is it better to cut on the black plastic or right on match point (red/black area)? Installing some custom LED's.
