Default HID vs Non HID

How can you tell the difference? Is it the color, I mean obviously the bulbs are different but from the pictures I've looked at the headlight housing and everything inside looks exactly the same.

I think my headlights are HID's... but I'm not sure. I'll put a picture up in a few, I'll need to go take one.

If your Z is anything but a base, it has HID's. If its a base, it has halogen headlights. The case is exactly the same.

You have HIDs.

The 03-05 base models had halogen lights. All other models and other years have HIDs.

Okay thanks, I thought I had HID's but I've never seen two Z's one with HID's one with Halogen, so I couldn't tell the difference.

Are the HID and Halogen headlight different? Not the bulbs but the headlights themselves. Could you swap halogens into a HID housing of you took the ballast out of the equation?

So the housings are different then? You can't plug a HID bulb into a Halogen connector?

Sure you can put HIDs into a Halogen housing...it just looks bad and you will blind anyone in front of you.

They make HID kits that have the HID "bulb" on the Halogen base that twists into the Halogen housing. But because Halogen housings have no cut off like the HID projectiong housing does the light goes everywhere, including up into the faces of people in front of you.

The housing looks the same for 03-04 HID/halogen owners. Some base owners, such as myself, have retro-fitted/installed HID harness/ballast/and bulbs.

Biggest ringer is when you first turn them on. They should be a darker blue/ purplish color and then charge up to a bright white.

What happened is I have an 03 Touring that for some reason has Halogen headlights...I have Leather/Bose/TDS/VDC/Cruise Control so it's for sure I don't have a base but I'm sure the previous owner must have swapped out the HID's...not sure why. So going on that assumption I bought some bulbs that obviously didn't fit into the halogen fixture. Now I need to sell them but no one is interested...

HIDs have a "charge-up" period when first turned on. You'll notice them flash on bright, get dim, and progressively get brighter. This happens within the first 5 seconds of light startup.
