Default Quick Question on new shift **** installation

Hey guys, I just purchased a genuine nissan/nismo carbon fiber shift ****, to replace my OEM shift ****. I'm sure that the shift **** simply screws off, but I just want to be sure. Wouldn't wanna mess with the shifter, unless I definitely know what I;m doing. So question is... does the shift **** simply screw off and then screw the new one on? Or do I actually have to lift the plastic panel up and take other steps? Thanks everyone!

Yes it just screws off but best to use vice grips or similar to hold the shifter while you turn the **** as it can really take some twisting.

The shift **** usually comes thread locked from the factory. If it hasn't been taken off before, you'll have to break the adhesive before it starts to unscrew.

Pop off the shifter trim and hold the shifter rod straight with a wrench while you twist the **** counter clockwise (try twisting by hand first). It's a lot easier to get the **** to break loose and a lot safer on your parts. If not, the assembly will just twist and flex with the **** while you're turning. That's how you get a lot of guys on here sheering apart their stock ***** wondering why their **** wont come off. Don't be a bozo and try to hulk twist the **** without holding the shift rod straight.

If you notice the new **** loosening while driving, use thread seal tape to keep your new **** from moving.

I tried taking the shift **** off by taking these steps, and I still cant remove it. I pulled the panel off and tried holding down the shifter with a C Clamp, and I still can't remove it. I'm assuming that the oem shift **** has never been taken off before. Tried using pliers and a few layers of packaging foam to protect the ****, but I ended up scuffing the oem **** a little bit -_-How do I break the adhesive bond?

Exclamation OEM Shift **** Removal... HELP

Hey guys, I just bought my nismo carbon fiber shift ****, and everything looks great. However, I have one problem... I can't remove my OEM shift ****... I tried doing it the safe way, by pulling the panel off, holding the shifter with a
C clamp to prevent the shifter from flexing and twisting (preventing shifter and/or internal transmission damage), and then hulk twisting the **** off. From what I have researched, the car comes with an adhesive bond between the **** and the shift lever? How the hell do I take this **** off???

I wrapped the OEM with a rag to protect it from scratches and clamped on channel lock and just twisted it off.

I tried doing that, but still wouldnt come off. I secured the shift lever with a c clamp, then used a pair of pliers and layers of packaging foam to protect it, and still couldnt get it off! ended up scratching the oem **** -_- I bought the nismo carbon fiber shift **** from amazon, but dont see any threads in it. Anyone know if it is self threaded?? Here's the link to what I bought...

Are you doing this in the cold by any chance? You can try heating up the **** with a heat gun. Keep it on the low setting, never keep it in the same spot, and cover the surrounding dash with a towel or something.

When I replaced mine a few months ago I did as shown in the picture using a thick rag over the oem shift ****. Long story short after 5 mins of struggling I removed the rag n went hulk on it and destroyed it but I got it off.

I had to destroy my factory shift **** to get it off.

Your new shift **** should have internal threading.

Yeah it has been cold, as I live in Long Island, New York. I tried using two channel locks while I held the shifter with one, and my buddy used channel locks to twist it off. Still didn't budge at all... At this point, I dont even care if I destroy the original ****. I already ****ed it up quite a bit trying to pick it off with a screwdriver and twisting it with channel locks. I plan on trying to heat it up with a heat gun, but am just worried about damaging the leather shift boot, as it is already kind of worn at the top. Should I consider bringing it to my local nissan dealership? This **** is really frustrating the **** out of me. Never would've bought the nismo **** in the first place if I had known it would be this much of a pain in the *** to do something that's so small -_-

^^ You can get it off, and you don't need heat to do this. Use a long enough lever for the job.

Lift the trim piece, and use a vise grip at the shifter's base. All you need is something to grip the shaft at its base to prevent it rotating when you loosen the shift ****.

Grip the **** with a tool long enough to generate the force necessary to loosen this. You will probably ruin the ****, but you have a replacement standing by.

I had to totally destroy my stock shift **** to get it loose. It had been on the shaft for 12+ years, glued in place with lock tight.

I had a hard time with this last year when I changed mine. Tried everything above but what worked was a rubber strap wrench....I used the bigger one in this set here from Lowes: http://www.lowes.com/pd_253674-16878...ductId=1072405

Was able to get my OEM **** off with no damage to it at all. It did take some effort but the rubber really grips hard and gives you some leverage.
