Default Installing TT: Pull engine or leave in place?

I've done a lot of searching and read for countless hours so please no forum police AKA "disrespectful members" heh.

I couldn't find any decent write-ups on how to install a twin turbo kit, and i'm guessing the obvious reason is because the kit comes with installation instructions. Well screw some of the instructions because we all know there are better and worse ways to do things, and the instructions aren't always 100% right.

I'm going to be installing the PE TT kit. The forum member i am purchasing it from said his shop did not need to remove the engine to do the install.

What do you guys recommend? Are there some special tools i could buy to get to the headers more easily? Certain things i should move out of the way to make access easier? Just pull it out?

Experienced installers, i appreciate your help!

Thanks,
Alex

Alex ... send a PM to protocav. I am not certain he will be able to do it for you, as he is moving right now ... but he might be able to help you out on this for a lot cheaper than you think.

Sorry for no good answer for you ... but all I got is a good heads up on a deal

I'd pull the motor. It's not that hard if you have the right tools and a cherry picker

Unfortunately i'm in Nor Cal right now so he wouldn't be able to help me with the install. I PM'd him with his take on my question though.

Good lookin' out Jim

Don't pull the motor. I just installed the APS TT in my car without pulling the motor. Your PE kit should install relatively the same.

Iinstalled my APS TT with the motor in, if I were to do it again, I would have pulled it because there are just a few more things to unhook before you pull it. I think I would have saved at least a day had I pulled the motor.

+1000 to the pull it crowd. Although all the kits can be installed with the engine inside the bay, it proves easier, and less time consuming to pull the engine.

i will always leave the engines in. i leave good enough alone and do not like to tamper with the entire powertrain when i am merely installing a turbo kit. i have a broad selection of tools and do not require the extra space of the engine not being in the car.

IMHO if you have to ask for special advice just to put turbos on the car, i wouldnt add to the complexity of the job by pulling out your entire engine.

OK so the vast majority of you guys are saying it will be easier in the long run to pull the engine. Next question is to leave the tranny in place or pull the tranny with the engine? (i have a 6mt if that matters)

Yep leave the tranny attached. Pull it all out as one.

If you decide to pull the motor (I under stand Phunk's reason why not to, but at the same time, I would pull it just to avoid working in such cramped conditions)...

pull it with the tranny attached, through the front of the car...Pull off the front clip (radiator, A/C condensor, etc...) and you can have the motor out in 4-5 hours with jackstands and a cherry picker

good luck
