Default My engine build process thread

My original plan over the winter was to squeeze the most out of my Vortech I could, but after seeing how much time and effort DSport put into their car and the humble numbers, I decided to scrap the project. I loved my vortech, but I wanted more and just didn't want to spend more money on it. I'm doing what I should have done the first time around.

Therefore, I have decided to go big (for me) or go home. Car is being towed (don't ask) next weekend to Ballistic Motorsports for a shortblock and eventually turbo.

The shortblock consists of:

Arias Pistons, Non-ED (8.5:1)
Pauter Rods
ARP L19 Studs
HKS Headgaskets
Pathfinder Cooling Mod

I'm not sure which turbo kit I will be going with yet. Possibly a used TN in the hopes of a future GTK upgrade, or a TT for the right price. The turbo part is TBD, but the engine build will start shortly.

I'll try to keep this thread updated with pics of the build process. I know there have been many threads on builds before me, but I guess I just wanted to feel special too

Comments/Questions/Concerns are welcome

Good luck with the build and the turbo decision; that's a nice list. Why not the ED pistons?

very nice...what is the projected power goal? If the goal is over 500whp, the twins are the only way to currently go. Depending on when your project is compeleted, you could wait for the Stage II TN upgrade.

Projected goal is around ~500whp...any more and I would have sleeved, but I had to draw the line somewhere...I've been debating on the TN stage 2, but since no one really knows the release, well...you know (patience is not my forte, lol). I have a couple choices. If I decide on twins, I'll put them on while the motor is out and break it in that way. If I decide on single, I'll probably put the motor back in and break it in for a while hoping the TN stage 2 comes out soon. If the stage 2 is out of reach, I might buy a used TN in good shape and swap out for a GTK. We'll see I guess. Right now the build is my focus.

Thanks goes out to the person who purchased my Vortech to make this all possible!!!!

Oh, and the reason I didn't choose the ED was because my power goal doesn't demand it. Like I said, I had to draw the line somewhere, or this can get quite out of hand financially

Good luck with everything. There are used TT kits for sale out there with very few miles on them, like... http://g35driver.com/forums/showthread.php?t=132875 Very good deal from an active member/good seller on here.

Thanks for the encouraging words everyone.

Indeed. Thanks. That's what I meant about getting a TT for a good price, but I don't want to put my eggs (money that is) in one basket just yet. I have some time before I need to actually purchase a kit so I can shop around and save up some more cash.

Why did you go with those beast a$$ rods if the goals are under 600whp and no sleeves, but you went with standard pistons? You could have ran Eagles and saved like $600. Build list looks good though, good luck in deciding on the snail(s)...

I hope I am wrong too. We tried 3 times with the Turbonetics single...even one with a T66 upgrade...and we couldnt quite get there. The power was sub 500whp, but the trq was well over 500ft/flbs. Getting a nice smooth build, all the way to 6500rpm is going to be tough...to say the least.

Here's some pix of the engine after being taken out and torn apart (not like it's anything anyone hasn't seen before )

Still on the fence. Leaning towards Greddy, but they don't offer a tuner kit, and that's all I need. I still have about a month to make the purchase, so no rush.

I could never understand why Greddy doesn't make a tuner kit. But you could always sell the other stuff you don't want that comes with it.
