Hey guys,

Thinking of upgrading my intercooler but I am a bit confused by this page:

http://www.turboneticsinc.com/node/81

Can any of you experts figure out why the 5-375 is rated at LESS power than the 5-312 despite being wider?

So basically going lower would only be with no load and highway speeds, the area that none of us having trouble with cooling. We have trouble with cooling during continious WOT.

If you want cooler temps all around you can just gut the thermostat then you'll acdtually have more flow since the parts inside reduce flow even when fully open. Only worth it for track cars or cars with something wrong with them. I'm just blown away that my car stays under 200* while driving hard and it's been triple digit temps out here for the last couple of weeks. Seems like the stock cooling system is working good for me i guess
Are you using an oil cooler Binder?

I thought that was weird being that I swore I purchased a oil catch can, so I inquired about the possibility of the O-ring seal going bad. He called around, as well as I and found that if I wanted new seals I would have to buy the whole valve cover from Nissan setting me back $230. I decided not to got that route yet, so when I pick my car up my VDC & Slip lights are both on the moment I boost my AF drops to 10. Kinda lost as to what way to go. Is it as easy to take it back to Forged get the seals & retune, or something more involved that I'm not taking into account?
The number 3 cylinder is on the passenger side first off, and what exactly do you mean oil in the spark plug. You mean the plug looks like its burning oil. OR oil is just leaking down the valve cover accumulating on top of the spark plug? I think you're talkin about the latter but I'm not sure that would cause a missfire. Perhaps if the oil was somehow grounding out the plug. *shrug*

And certainly not a/f of 10.

Yeah what's the code?

Personally, i'd pull the plug out myself and confirm. Disconnect the batt, or reset the ecu. Clean out the spark plug seat, put back together see what happens.

the wider the cooler the longer the path the air has to travel from end to end. When you add length to a tube/pipe/etc you will increase the resistance in that tube. Same applies to intercoolers. Increased resistance shows a drop in pressure therefore loss of boost seen at the throttle body.

Hp ratings on intercoolers depends a lot on the flow of the intercooler. Less resistance=greater flow. If your turbo pushes 1500cfm of air and your intercooler can only flow 1000cfm of air then you're reduced to the power level of whatever 1000cfm will provide.

Then why would this intercooler even exist?

I was surprised too about that...I'm currently running the 5-312 in my car and I recommend it

You can keep the crash bar too; all I had to do was modify the pipes into and out of the IC...

Keeps my AIT's low enough for ~500+ whp on a Vortech...

because it's not a wide....some people can't fit a wider intercooler therefore they make different sizes to fit different applications.

Guys, what's the best TPs for us with FI'ed cars? especially that we need ones with extra bung for WB gauge.

something less raspier than the rest would be an advantage.

i wanna replace my Berk HFCs.. they suck!

thanks!

I will second that. My second set went bad too. Cracked around the bracket welds and the Cat started coming apart. Total mileage on them was under 2000.

Looking a Test pipes myself with a XZY Pipe and Cat.

i used cheap ebay JVT test pipes and they worked fine for me.

I never had rasp. Mine went through a borla exhaust though. I think that it's the muffler that causes the rasp more than test pipes. I've heard a lot of the aftermarkets on our cars on stock cats and they sounded raspy and mine are test pipes on borla with zero rasp.

i had the h pipe on there like normal. No drone at all which is the other reason i chose borla. A couple locals have exhausts and it hums you to death on the highway. I hate it. Mine never had the problem.

I currently do not have the h pipe anymore. My turbo downpipe goes straight to my resonators of the borla. Still no rasp or drone.

and the jvt worked fine for me. cheap but they never cracked or had any problems. THey were also polished nice and clean when i got them.

The XYZ pipe will not be available from Motordyne for at least another month according to Tony, but there should be ART pipes available in about 1 week.

I am interested in this setup, but unsure if they will make power, or will actually lose boost/power. No one has really done an accurate test measuring aftermarket HFC's and y pipe vs. Motordyne ART pipes and XYZ pipe with HFC on centrifugal S/C.

Look again, it is the 4 inches WIDER than the one that is good for 550whp, and equal in all other dimensions.

^ i think he answered your original question already. wider should provide more cooling, but there is a point where the additional width decreases flow. as to why the 28" one exists when its rated at slightly lower power, my guess is it just comes down to demand. some folks want a wider intercooler for aesthetic reasons, the 28" one may work better in some applications, etc. etc. etc.
