Lightbulb Intercooler Fans?

Looked around forum a bit with no result...

On a buddy's Porsche his custom turbo setup has fans on the intercooler. I'm not sure if he told me they kick on while idle or run full time. In his ride I can understand a need for it a bit more as the intercooler is in the back of the car and probably not getting as much direct air as in a front mount IC like ours but wondering if anybody tried or if it's even worth trying?

I'm gonna run highspeed fans on the back of a Koyo racing radiator and one fan behind a stillen oil cooler kit I'm installing. This car will be tracked pretty hard and while keeping the oil/coolant temps down I thought about additional cooling for the intake charge and how to make more power via cooling that charge. I'm sure I'll end up going down the water/meth route but still want to see some conversation on this.

On the track is the least likely place you will see problems with intercooler cooling. The car is moving and airflow even with the stock bumper should be good enough without fans. The issue is when driving on the street in stop and go traffic.

The GTM fan shroud and HO fans pull a huge amount of air across the intercooler providing alot of cooling. I don't know which intercooler you will be using, but a new front bumper with a larger opening than stock will help more than any fan would. The stock bumper opening will not permit the entire face of most intercoolers to be exposed.

The Turbonetics ST kit for the G35 has fans installed to move air behind the stock bumper.

In the case of the 350z car I'm more thinking about down times. SCCA time attacks also have a lot of down time. I'm just brainstorming for ideas and think that you could kill a lot of heat soak with some fans if they could be triggered when in idle. I have never had an FMIC as big as what I'll be installing in the Z but previous cars with smaller ICs I've noticed they get extremely hot. Cooling them in between runs seems like a good ideas especially if it can be done for under a few hundred bucks...?

I have the GTM aluminum radiator fan shroud with HO fans and they pull an incredible amount of air over the intercooler while stopped. There is no need for a dedicated intercooler fan.

question:

i assume that the GTM fan shroud kit helps pull air to the intercooler on the 350z, since it has one single, large opening in the middle of the front bumper, at least compared to the stock G35 bumper. Everyone here is familiar w/ the stock g35 bumper, so would the GTM fan shroud and HO help pull air over the intercooler on a stock g35 bumper?

if you shrouded the IC to the radiator, then all the air that the fans sucks thru would have no choice but to hit the IC first.

Meth!! The best IC radiator you can buy!!

Go from 80 degree intake temps down to the 20's in seconds!!! Hell you really dont even need a IC.

this is the road i chose to get more air to the intercooler and rad. i have to run a plate here in oregon so i couldn't cut out the middle section also though. i layered up some thick fiberglass matting behind the area before cutting it out so it is extremely strong also.
as charles mentioned too though, shrouding is a big plus. i was hesitant to remove the front marker lights because of the loss of pressure built up to force the air through the rad. but looks won that battle, lol.

+1 This is very true. Even just water injection will do wonders for bringing down combustion temps and raising the knock threshold. Shrouding is a great idea too. Fans would be a last resort (for me) if I couldn't get temps under control at idle.

I think having fans should help to cause more airflow .... but maybe this one is better .
