Greddy Oil Seals Leaking????
Comming off WOT I'm getting some smoke out my exhaust. I only have about 3000mi on the Greddy kit. The smoke doesn't happen every time. Maybe 1 out of 10 times. Any ideas?
My windows are tinted and it's hard to tell, but just from the comming off WOT symptom I'm assuming it's the turbo seal. But after only 3000 mi? Is everyone getting this once in a while?
I do and at more times as well, I am wondering if the synthetic oil is too thin for the turbo seals, they are not the most sophisticated seals and can see how thin oil would get past them

ITS NOT THE SEALS, I had a long talk with a tech from Forced Performance and he stated that the seals on a turbo work alot different (real hard to explain call yourself and listen). If your turbo has play and the wheel it self is hitting the housing... get your turbo out of there and rebuild it.
There is to much bull chit on this forum that clouds peoples minds.

I've been doing a lot of reading on turbo seals recently. I had my PCV valve get blocked and my car turned into the space shuttle.
I feared the worst but things are looking better after a few trial runs... (many thanks to Sharif for diagnosing the problem remotely and holding my hand as I worked through this issue).
It is now my understanding that as Dil states, turbo seals are designed differently than you might think. And in fact, they generally work in tandem with compressor and turbine pressures to keep oil contained.

Anything that disturbs the balance of air flow or oil flow may cause turbos to "spill" oil. The good news is that if you can correct the underlying problem, in many circumstances, the oil leaks will stop.
That said, you may need to do some cleaning of the IC, piping etc. if you've been running "out of balance" for some time - otherwise you'll continue to have spurts where pooled oil in the piping is ingested into the engine every so often.
One other issue to think about is where crankcase vapors are going under boost and at idle... If you truly want to keep oil out of the intake system, it takes some careful planning, or there may be short periods where the car is indeed run "out of balance", resulting in transient oil leaks.
EDIT: And oh yes, I was running 10W-40 and am now switching to Motul 15/50 for the summer...
EDIT#2: Here's a cutaway pic of a turbo...

I had this problem very slightly but it has increased within the last 3-4 months I think. After my last oil change a couple of weeks ago it got a little worse (the smoke that is).
Do you get any strong exhaust (fume like) odor as well? I do.
Let us know what you do to resolve this. Good Luck JETPILOT! Hopefully you resolve the situation.
had about 15k on my turbos before rebuild, they never smoked. new seals now, and still no smoke. there have been a few times though that i got my oil so hot (water temps were at 280!) and i was getting some smoke, but that was the only time and condition.
i would just try thicker oil to start with.

Depending on the turbo, a restrictor might be needed. I had a brand new turbo on my car and the car was smoking when in boost, there was also after about 3 weeks 2-3 teaspoons of oil that collected in the coupler elbow before the ic piping. Got an oil restrictor for the feed, and no more leaks. If the turbo is a bb, it more than likely could use a restrictor.

Im running royal purple 15-40. I used to run mobile 1 10-30 but after I switched to the royal purple I found last weekend my car smoked for a bout 30 seconds then went away. Now last night after getting on it a few times it smoked for a few minutes only out of the drivers bank. I then turn it off and turn it back on, nothing. Could this be that royal purple is too thin? Or is it something that I should check compression for a piston ring, or is it maybe a turbo seal?
it might be your oil... mine started doing this after i switched to Rotella T Sync 5w40 .. i'm thinking about switching.. but i just changed my oil last sunday.. not even 100 miles on it
My royal purple has been in for about 3 weeks now. Its just weird how it started for only 30 seconds then nothing for a week, then last night it does it fora minute then nothing.
