thanks Darren for the well thought out post...refreshing addition to this otherwise polluted thread

I guess the question is still out there though - if the ecu is supposed to constantly adjust itself according as I believe 1zweetZ pointed out many times, what would/could cause the plugs to look that way, in such a short period of time, and why wouldn't the ecu make the appropriate changes on it's own?

I think Darren stated in one of his posts that his car had some type of fuel issue...

I had seen that, and I think that's certainly an obvious cause, but again, why wouldn't the ecu adjust around that issue as it's supposed to (assuming the car was tuned overly rich, for example)?

The ecu gets it's information on what to adapt through various sensors. If these sensors are "lying" to the computer, not failed, just lying...moving around, the computer doesn't think they are "stuck" it doesn't think they are shorted or open, it thinks they are working. From what Darren said he had a lose wire that was causing the IAT to move around, and the computer was fueling according to what the ecu was seeing the air temp to be. Plugs can come out looking that way after 30 seconds of running really rich...let alone a few thousand miles. There are also limits on how far the ecu is allowed to correct. If it has to correct outside a set range, it knows something is wrong and stops at those limits.

Darren....

Thanks for the info.....and yes I am aware of your accomplishments.

Yes, I am aware of who Adam is. I started with the RX7 and Pettit Racing back in '94.....I took time off from my practice to help Cameron run Pettit Racing...... so I have been in this game a long time....and I have been a BOOSTHEAD from then on.

I have been certified as car crazy by the Meguires Standards.... I too have a laundry list of cars that only Sharif and 2 others on here are aware of......I will not list them because it has nothing to do with this website....but all I will say is "you have to see it to believe it". Matter of fact...I have a house just off Tom Darlington overlooking The Boulders Resort....which is not far from you, so I could take you on a tour....I will be there for a few months starting in September. I did not plan on having this many cars....but I usually upgrade them too far to sell. Look at my G...I would NEVER be able to sell this thing....Its at FP every 2 months...not for repairs...but for upgrades...Yes...I know I have issues

I have Turbocharged almost every car I have owned...all but one. From the mother of all Porsches to a '08 CaymanS that I just bought for my other half that I just received a one off turbo kit for. I asked Sharif to install it for me...but he said no....he does not want to mess with a project like that at this time. I know once I TT this Cayman...she will not want it anymore....and the saga and laundry list gets longer.

So to the point.....I do not doubt the ProEFI.....I am truly interested in an EMS that can do what you all are saying it can.....but I want other to do the foot work. I am tired of being the first and having to deal with the headaches. I was one of the first to send one of my cars out of the country to Arden to turn it into a monster. Monster I got....but there is no toning this thing down. It shifts gear like its trying to give me and the passenger whiplash. It took them a year to get it straight....

SO like I said .....I will keep watching to see when this EMS ( in my opinion) gets to the level and reliability of the Motec.....I know other have said that it has exceeded the Motec....but like I said ..."In my opinion"..

Jorge will be getting his car soon....I will wait for him to have it for a while and then update us.

Good luck to you all Darren....keep up the good work.

so should that be something the installer should have found, or that the ecu would recognize and send some sort of indicating warning for? I think he posted that the car had 3 sets of plugs come out like that in the months that the car used the ecu

Please no more comments on ProEFI processor speed please. It means little to nothing.

http://www.tech-faq.com/cpu-speed.shtml

The first line reads: "CPU speed is not a reliable indicator of CPU performance"

For any EMS out there today, I don't think anyone has ever complained about their EMS being too slow, stock or aftermarket.

Man, I had kids too soon. At least I won't be too old when they're on their own.

Live it up Mike.

CPU speed is not a reliable indicator of CPU performance certainly refers more to home computers as there are many more variables with one. That entire article is about home computers, not car ECUs. Im sure there are other variables in a car ECU also.... I just doubt that there are anywhere near as many.

And yes, I have seen a few aftermarket ECUs be too slow. In fact I have seen some get so overloaded that on a high RPM pull they will actually skip a few injector pulses!!
