Newb building motor for greddy twins
Hey Guys, I have a 05 6 speed with 55k on it. I was going to install a Greddy Twin Turbo kit and call it a day, but decided to build the motor before hand. I was thinking of upgrading the pistons and rods and then changing the cams to lower the compression. If anyone knows a reliable build list so I could build a reliable 600hp motor. I am not trying to go crazy and get it bored and machined. I don't want to spend $20k building a motor. If $3-5k(in parts only) can build me a stout motor to handle the range of the greddy system, I'd surely appreciate the recipe (part/brand).
I am going to do a meth kit and upgrade fuel system. I will do a full fuel management system down the line when I am ready to start pushing it and just deal with the e-manage for now. Clutch will be upgraded, cooling system (radiator + tranny cooler) upgraded. Car already has upgraded bbk and coilovers and forged wheels. Ready for the power.
Thanks for any help.

machine work will almost be a must for most piston sets, as they are .020 over anyway.
call kyle at IPP he has motors assembled ready to ship if you want a DIY. You can a longblock for that price to hold that hp.

spend the money for your meth kit on having the block properly bored, honed, line honed, etc.
you won't have a motor last very long if the cylinders aren't properly bored and honed to the needed specs of your pistons.

Honestly been researching turbo's for awhile now and not gone so into depth about building the motor. What I've read though wasn't always clear (too much **** to read through on the internet). I guess I could have called a bunch of performance shops and irritated the hell out of them, but I figured I'd utilize the internet. I don't post here often because you guys post all that bull **** up in so many threads before anyone chimes in with any useful answers. Now this is just one more useless bull **** thread to browse through for the next person looking for information. Job well done, now post ***** away. I thought I could get away with some information but of course not, only everyones helpful remarks. I'll go back to not posting for the sake of not cluttering your guys pretty lil forum
Here is a list of a basic build which should hold up to 650 RWHP:
Engine:
ARP Main Studs
Arias Forged Piston Set 8.5:1 .020 Overbore
Eagle Forged Rods
Cosworth Head Gasket
A Catch Tank (Greddy doesn't work well apparently in our engine bay)
Snow Water/Meth for extra protection against detonation
UTEC at a bare minimum for engine management
You can buy a prebuilt short block from a tuner like Forged Performance like their S1 block:
http://www.forgedperformance.com/sto...4&cat=0&page=1
Or have the work done at your local shop with the parts above. Weakest link on the VQ is the rods and the pistons really; so you should be fine just getting those done (like the engine build above). To get more power from the Greddy (i.e. increase boost) get bigger injectors (650CC) and an upgraded fuel pump; fuel return line in my opinion is good but if you are not running your injectors at full duty it should hopefully not be much of an issue with the factory return-less system. A Greddy Evo Exhaust would be a good decision as well. You will probably need to upgrade your clutch although since I don't own a 6MT; I am not sure how much they can handle.
The enging build above shouldn't run you more than 6-7k; I think there is even a sponsor on here who sells prebuilt shortblocks for $2600 as well if you want a cheaper route.
For tuner/shops, Forged Performance seems to be one of the few shops that doesn't have "much" negative things on the site but every shop will have that customer/people who hate them so take personal opinions here with light regard and check out shops yourself.

Pistons, rods and block machining are a must. You will need to decide on aftermarket head gaskets (HKS) or the HR stock gasket and have the heads decked before reassembly. Cams are great to add power, the Brian Crower 2's seem to be the most popular right now to have a steady idle and still make high end HP. I do not think that these cams require any valvetrain adjustments, but I am not sure on this. You will also need a gasket rebuild kit and most would suggest installing the HR oil pump and new bearings and seals. Also, you can decide if you want to install the pathfider cooling mod and the Nismo low temp thermostat.

Reliable and 600rwhp is somewhat of an oxymoron. If you do a build like this, an alternative DD is almost amust. The mod list above for the motor + EMS + exhaust + Greddy Kit = $15-20K easy. You can build for less, but money = reliability to a degree and 600rwhp is not a small number by any means.

Meth is a nice add on, but not if you are on a budget. You will need a meth map tune and a default, low boost, non meth tune. The radiator and tranny cooler may not be necessary unless you track your car. The clutch is a must and dont forget axels as well. Without the fuel system, your setup will be handcuffed from the start and you will never make the power you want.
Thanks for any help.

I hope this helps. BTW I see that you have been a member since 2003, but have almost no posts. Possibly the biggest lurker ever
. The reason you got flamed is that much od the info you wanted is in the F/I forum if you search for it, and the budget you suggest and list of mods you stated are not realistic for 600+rwhp. Good luck with your build.
wow some pathetic people exist on this planet.....back to lurking for meLast edited by JBL85; Nov 9, 2008 at 08:17 AM.
