Default Thinking about going turbo? Is it worth it?

So with tax returns coming around this year im thinking about using mine to turbo my 06 MT 350z. I am just curious if those of you that have gone turbo is it worth it? I am going to go single turbo just because TT isnt really the direction im looking to go, i just want a lil more power on the Z. I already have all the bolt ons i can buy so this is my next step if i were going to get a power adder. Iv read that turbonetics isnt really the way to go as far as singles go so i have been looking into the power labs kit. Anyone want to chime in on any of this? How will my stock clutch hold up to this kit (42k on the Z) Any other things i will need besides a kit and EMS? whats the best ems to go with? i know i couldve read a bunch of threads but honestly i want up to date opinions!

Good luck on the new turbo.

Powerlab =

On stock block power your clutch should be ok for a good while, but plan on an upgrade when it needs replaced.

IMO the PL kit is at its best when installed by a knowledgeable shop and tuned by the same shop. Larger injectors, an EMS (Utec at min - standalone if budget permits) and fuel return system are also good mods that will allow for more power down the road.

Cass waits for IIQuicksilverII to jump in with more info on the PL kit.

Remember, boost is like crack...at first a little gets you by, but after a while, you need more and more.

I'm parting out my 06 350z MT soon. I put an APS single on it with all the parts plus the APS exhaust last year. Bullet proof setup without any problems. Only drove it 2000 miles so its just like new. My car only has 16,000 miles on it. GRD, the local and best pro engine builder here in the Chicagoland area, installed it at and many other parts last year for me. They will remove it once it's sold.

I can send you receipts if your interested. your thoughts?

BTW, its set only at 385 RWHP = 450 to the flywheel. I have the dyno sheets. It is fast as hell. I powder coated the front oversized intercooler black to hide it's appearance. I'll also sell you the DEFI triple gauge pod that fits perfectly into the existing middle triple Nissan pod.

Just looking for someone like yourself to claim this prize. you might want GRD to install and tune your car too! I've got stop tech 6 piston front and 4 piston rear brakes with the highest performance pads (about $1,000 for the performance friction pads). Tein coilovers with EDFC in car controller, Much more to sell, again with only a couple 1,000 miles on this stuff.

APS Single Turbo System with Intercooler 1 $4,995.00
APS Massive Black Powder Coated Intercooler
APS Custom Mapped Engine Management System
APS Huge Cast Alloy High Capacity Oil Sump pan
APS High Flow Cold Air intake System
APS High Volume Twin Vent Blow Off Valve
APS High Outlput Exhaust System 3.5" SS Downpipe
APS High Output SS 2.5" catback exhaust with muffler $995.00
APS Massive Black Powder Coated intercooler

DEFI Boost Gauge - Amber $256.00
DEFI Exhaust Gas Temp Gauge - Amber $299.00
DEFI Oil Pressure Guage $299.00
DEFI Gauge Control Unit - Version II $115.00

Let me know. I'll sell it at 70% of the actual cost shown above once it comes off.

Any decent brand name single turbo kit is valid if it's installed properly. Every car we fix is basic install issues and tuning.

If the shop that installs it just bolts the kit on, and doesn't have an honest opinion on some logical upgrades, they aren't paying attention. I haven't dealt with a single turbo or sc that has been 100% complete and couldn't use a little bit extra attention. Even something as small as heat wrap in the right places can cost you a small fortune in the long run.

Remember the car didn't come that way, and you're talking about adding aftermarket parts. So find yourself a reputable shop and work with them. None of the people with answers on a forum are going to help you when their advice backfires and you're needing to rebuild your motor.

I would suggest riding in or driving a boosted car first and watch your smile wrap around your skull and then decide. So far and luckily i have been boosted one way or another for over 50,000 miles and as long as you keep up with simple maitenance you should be fine.

Honestly, if I could do it all again, I'd go all out on suspension and brakes stuff (Coilovers, diff, sways, brakes, etc) before I did FI. Don't get me wrong, I love my car, but I think I'd enjoy it a lot more if I had a serious set of brakes and a well tuned suspension. Plus, well-setup NA cars can be a hoot.

Well, I went with suspension before I made up my mine with FI. Stance gr + and sway bars to match goes along ways when you want to huge the road. Not to mention 19' Volk GTS to give it a nice look. Anyways back to my point. Turbo is a great idea if you know how to install it yourself or your looking to achieve over 400rwhp. Labor for a decent speed shop (AMM,GTM or Forged Performance) would charge you a lot more then if you were to go with a supercharger. Yes, you will not have the torque of a turbo nor the better fuel economy. The install would be cheaper and the power of FI will be safer.
Personally I picked up a nicely per owned Vortex SC for under 3k. Forged Performance will be installing it in 2 weeks. I saved right at 50% in labor and 40% in parts just by going with a SC. The only down fall is the prestige of that beautiful sound and the lack of torque. If you ask me FI is FI I can only give my option and nothing else. I hope what ever you pick you enjoy it to the fullest, because I love my car and can't wait to feel the FI G35 for the first time.
