Aside from LS swaps gaining some popularity, it seems that the VQ platform has become stagnant without much development or innovation this past year. There hasn't been much new or exciting to hold my interest in this forum. Hence my inactivity here over the past 6 months.

Other platforms seem to be more progressive with new products, technologies, and techniques. For instance, the new Borg Warner EFR series turbos are being discussed on other forums, but I don't see much buzz about them here.

I understand though that the sh*tty economy has been a big factor in why the VQ community has hit a plateau.
there is only sooo much you can do to a G/Z and like you said thou, other highend platforms seems to be the way to go these days..

...to comment on the title of the thread...

Yeah, what happened

I removed myself from the forums in late 2007. I took a new job with a 50% income drop for the first year (but would have recovered by the second year). Therefore I needed to get away from temptations to continue with modding my Z and getting into debt. As life goes, I was laid off from that new job in 2009 and have been unemployed ever since. I came back tonight to see what's up with the community. It's dead. Where did everyone go? My active years here were 2004-2007. I remember when almost every subforum, especially the FI subforum had like two pages of new threads every day. We'd be discussing and comparing all of the FI systems.
With the 370z out, I suspected that those associated subforums would be very active...but they're not. I suspect there is a different forum (website) for the 370.

Did some kind of big drama happen here? Did the owners of the site sell it? Did the vendors defect? Apparently many members did.

Someone point me in the right direction here...where is everyone?

I suspect this post might get deleted if someone points me to a different forum group, so PM me please.

This actually upsets me, to see a Z in such state of hurt just isn't right. Each to there own when it comes to modding, but Its owner should be castrated for such crimes!

Hello??? This is a large part of what happened Every year there will be a handful of big builds and maybe one or two will shoot for 1XXXwhp, but there is a stasis point that has been achieved. The bulk of the R&D for FI on this platform has been done. It takes people and shops with special skills and special wallets to make new and different things happen.

I think this is definitely true for twin turbo and supercharger applications on the VQ. But I think there is still room for significant growth and progress in terms of single turbo applications, E85, as well as motor and transmission swaps. I think 2011 has the potential to be a good year for progress and excitement in FI for the Z/G. I'm guardedly optimistic.

No reason for the sarcasm. Yes, it makes sense that everything was affected by the recession. Although there is not much R&D going on for the 350z for obvious reasons, I thought that people would still be building and discussing to a certain point. I noticed Turbonetics dropped out. Who else?

Turbonetics, ATI procharger, PE, STS, APS, Stillen ---All have lost popularity for various reasons

Next off the block will probably be Powerlab...there single turbo kit is having a hard time in the FI forum.

BP is coming up strong. Greddy is still the most popular TT and Vortech the most popular SC. HKS SC was going strong for a bit because of reduced pricing but still not alot of support out for it.

To me the VQ seems like it's made of glass compared to the 2JZ, 4G63, ect... even engine builder vendors on this forum seem to have a hard time getting things right, at least on a consistent basis. Doesn't surprise me people move on to other platforms when they want high HP and less drama. With the HR able to hold 500+WHP in stock form and built DE's still blowing up left and right (and never the builder's fault, right?), it's no wonder R&D and wallets have moved on... I blame it half on VQ bubble shops, past, and current vendors on this form that screwed countless people over the years, the other half on the economy. Let's face it... alot of people with blank checks 2-3 years ago are too busy looking for work today to spend time on a forum or their cars.

Two points to note:

The VQ35DE is an open deck design.

The VQ35DE is an aluminum block.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think the 2JZ is a cast iron block - greater strength, but more weight. I'm not familiar with the 2JZ, so I don't know whether it is an open or closed deck design.

The HR block is a closed deck design, which should make it better suited for high hp builds in comparison to the DE - there is structural support at the top of the cylinders.

I have a VQ35DE with the block modified by GTM to be closed deck being installed soon (hopefully). It should help with long term reliability. We'll see. I'm the guinnipig on this. The motor is complete and sitting at Japtrix waiting to be installed. Supposidly this will happen after the holidays.

I stand corrected then. It looks like the HR is not a closed deck design.
