Default transmission issues

the 6speed isn't as strong as I thought it was...
looks like I ate up 3rd gear last night. spring pressure of about 12 lbs (maybe 450-475 hp) doing a pull in 3rd, get a nice bang and good amount of shutter. Now I have no 3rd gear.

23k miles on the car, about 17k miles boosted. this is a late year 2004 (read that as a 2004.5 with the CD008 trans)

Anyone ever rebuilt these trans or am I looking at a replacement? I have a call in to a local shop about a rebuild.

edit: got her on the hoist tonight. it is a CD008 trans.

Thinking you would probably be better off getting a complete new transmission.

I dont personally know if the CD009 has a stronger 3rd gear or not than the older DE trans.

I remembered BriGuy had an aftermarket 3rd gear and I was able to find this thread you might find interesting:

Thanks for the link.... Not sure I am ready to man up for 600/gear + rebuild.

ended up finding a used CD009 locally. supposed to be under 40k with 1 yr warranty -> for $500 bucks. local dealer quoted me 1750 for a new trans. figured it was worth the risk on the used one. time will tell.

we pulled the trans. No visible damage to the outer part of the gears. the way the car behaved, thinking I shaved off the inner part of the gear or the splines on the shaft. didn't rip it apart any further after I found out what I could get a used one for.

cd009's should be less than 1000 used. I had a few for spares and sold them for 600-750 depending the mileage.

That's very odd you would have a failure at that boost. These transmissions have held well into the 1000 hp mark without issues. I think someone even tore it down to inspect and the gears were thicker and stronger than the GETRAG that all the dsm guys use and put tons of power through.

It was probably a defective part. I would be surprised if it was anything with a gear since the gears are really stout. Very rare occurrence for sure.

3rd gear engagement ring failure has been reported by multiple folks over the years. Not sure if the CD009 addresses this at all.

Oh I completely forgot about that failure. I guess since everyone was swapping 009's I guess it just faded into the back of my memory.

For some reason I was just focusing on gear failure and not the small ring gear which actually sounds like what happened here. Must have been upgraded in the 009.
