shame.

hey guys, i'm a bit confused... what exactly is done during VBU? is it about drillig holes to improve line pressure? or just install some stiffer springs that came with the transgo kit? or are they being done altogether? did yall have local shops done it or sent it off across the states?

thanks!

You can buy the kit and try to implement it yourself (wouldn't recommend unless you know what you're doing).

You could take the kit to a transmission shop that has installed shift kits before.

You could send your VB to one of the places that installs them (e.g. Forged, GTM, SFR) and they will return it to you with the VB completed.

You could take your car to a shop that knows the 5AT and let them take care of it. JTRAN might be able to help you in Texas.

hey thanks for the reply! but did yall only reprogram and install the springs that come w/ transgo kit? or was there a drilling involved also? if so, what does it improve upon? i'm assuming the shifting part would be improved due to the transgo kit...

thanks!

I'm pretty sure there is some kind of valve-in-valve modification (drilling) but I don't have first hand experience. GTM took care of everything for my 5AT and Forged did the R&R of the transmission itself.

its pretty easy if you are a trans. guy or work with transmission alot. its basically drilling out a few of the orifices and installing new springs in certain locations and also restricting an orifice on the trans body itself. you can actually download the installation instructions on gtm website.

Yeah I don't think they have any DIY valve body kits out on the market yet

How long does it take to do the vb upgrade from start to finish?

I bought mine from Matt(the moderator)allready modified from FP.I had to switch out the circuit board with the solenoids for the g as g's have a 2 connector hookup and the z's have a 1 piece hookup. It took about 2 hours.

A buddy and I installed my Transgo kit. It was done on jack stands...garage type setup. The whole process beginning with draining the ATF ending with refilling the tranny...took around 8 hours. Neither of us had ever worked on an automatic tranny before. You can do it if you research it enough and print out a few different instruction booklets.

YES! You feel a huge difference. For the time being I am N/A and can chirp the 1-2 and the 2-3 shifts. (285's in the rear)

Of all the different valve body kits on the market, how are they ranked as far as

-shift speed

-rough/softer gear shifts (do any of them shift with the same jolt level as the stock vb)

-how they factor prolonging the life of the 5AT in FI applications

Is there a chart online somewhere that categorizes these features among the valve body choices for our cars?

If not, can we create one? I'd happily help if I can get the data from some field testing or volunteers.

If there are any additional categories we should consider with this part please let me know.

Thanks

I can only say that I have had the stock, Stillen and Transgo VB's.

Stock: shifted very quickly with the stock engine. Chirped in 1-2 shift and occasionally 2-3 shift.
Stillen: Shifted very slow up ( no chirping but lots of hitting the rev limiter) and shifted even slower down. I would not recommend this for any application.
Transgo: In drive it shifts like the stock VB. Normal auto shifting. In drive at WOT it shifts very quickly and hard. In manual mode it shifts hard and fast. With my set up (Vortech 7# boost/350rwhp) it will chirp the tires through all shifts. It also shifts down quickly. I needed a VB that would also shift down quickly as I don't just drag race. There is no doubt it will extend the tranny's life, but if you make over 400rwhp you might want to do a whole tranny upgrade. I drag race once a week, so I'm going to wear mine out too, but I'm severely abusing it.

Transgo is the way to go........you will love it! As noted..if you don't have AT experience I wouldn't try putting it in myself. I watched the 4 hour install by the Z Car Garage and there is a lot to do and a lot of places to make a mistake.

Just a quick update on my 5AT. I thought something was wrong with it, but it turned out to be a wire inside my paddle shifters that rubbed until it started shorting out. Intense fixed it and now it shifts again. I also had horrible track times last time. I figured out the largest part of the problem. My car was worked on by UMS and Pro-EFI. They fixed the high/low boost switch, but they set the boost levels MUCH lower than before.

Original Boost Levels:
Low: ~15lbs
High: ~22lbs

Current (not happy with) boost levels:
Low: ~7lbs (spring pressure)
High: ~15lbs

I ran on low boost thinking I had 525 WHP and I probably had more like 350WHP! No wonder my times and traps got worse! I'll make a run soon and update how the trans handles the power.

Thank god it was a 'simple' fix. Crank the boost up!
