One exhaust to another?
so i am doing som eresearch and trying to find the right exhaust for me...i realize that it comes down to personal preferance but i have a couple of questions maybe the forums could help me answer...
1] can i expect to see about the same horsepower gains from all exhausts no matter which one i choose. being that if i choose to go with an hks 3" true dual exhaust vrs say a 3" injen true dual exhaust
2] can i expect to see same horsepower gains from a single pipe exhaust as a true dual exhaust
in a nutshell isnt an upgraded exhaust and upgraded exhaust, no matter the company? i mean isnt all exhausts the same pretty much?

No. Sport-Z magazine did an exhaust shoot-out some time ago. Some exhausts performed better than others.
2] can i expect to see same horsepower gains from a catback exhaust as a true dual exhaust
Not sure of the question. A true dual exhaust is a cat-back system.

No. Just like motors and tires. You will find quality and you will find garbage.

I wonder if anyone has scanned that article? It doesn't show up in the searches (yet), but I'll keep working on it.
Hmm
Duals = 2 2.5" pipes aka 5" flow
Single = One 3" pipe
Which one has more flow potential?
Quality wise
You have Kia all the way to Bugatti
Do you drive a Bugatti? Do you drive a Kia?.....somehow there is a middle ground for those of us driving Z's....if money was no object than I dont think we would be driving Z's....but at the same time we wouldnt exactly bolt-up something a 5yr old made in kindergarden out of paper
Find an exhaust that fits your budget, your style and you sense of sound.....some prefer power over sound suppression....find your style and I am sure youll find an exhaust to suit your needs
Where did you spot a dual HKS 3"
Link?

^ i couldnt disagree more with the above post....
"Duals = 2 2.5" pipes aka 5" flow
Single = One 3" pipe"
Thats not how it works....
Some would say 3" single flows better. Relatively its about the same. Get what you like....

maybe i could just add to my previous post
some members have suggested to define my goal as to what it is i am looking to achieve.....
i guess to be honest i am loking for a sweet sound and added hp, with the added horsepower being the key objective...i already love the sound of the 350z's vq motor.....so if i am to do the exhaust it would only be because i have heard that the 350z isnt breathing all that well, and i could gain a few ponies by upgrading the exhaust. i have fallowed one link that led me to a sport Z magzine exhaust shootout not to many of the current exhausts were on the lsit the one exhaust i was or am lookign at is the injen ses exhaust on the sport magazine thread it suggested that the injen didnt do to bad it wasnt the best but wasnt the worst. and seems to be in my price range.....
however i did hear an injen with the universal tips on an automatic 350z and i didnt find it to be as nice sounding as the nismo exhaust....
my local dealer has suggested to me the hks and greddy evo2, and tried to get me away from the injen? well i dont want to spend 2g for the exhaust so i can almost rule out the hks i might be able to spring the 1500 for the greddy which is only a couple hundred more that the injen. however what i like about the injen is that it is a true dual exhaust.....and am thinking i might get more hp..from the true dual? whereas the greddy evo2 is 1 single pipe. \
does anyone have anyother suggestions for exhausts to think about in the price range of the injen and greddy.... preferably a true dual exhaust...

You can flow more by using to larger tubes than you can by one slight larger tube....thats just basic math
Each bank has a 2.5" tube to crap out of vs your 1.5" sharing of one 3" pipe
The POTENTIAL flow of two 2.5" tubes is greater whether you want to believe it or not
Of all the exhausts with Dual vs Single I have yet to see one single out perform the best duals......do you have an example to show where a single was better?
I really hope this helps. Well I have an 06 Z. I have changed my exhaust no less than 8 or 9 times over the last year i had my car. Here is the list
Greddy Evo-II
Borla (cause i am an idiot and didnt know any better)
Invidia
Nismo
Agency power single exhaust
Custom 2.5 true dual exhaust with HKS Carbon Ti Canisters (loudest thing in the world)
Then I went back to a Custom 2.5 inch exhaust. Nothing but a Y-pipe then a straight pipe all the way back and the Carbon Ti canister.
Well the worst two you can ever go with as far as power goes is Borla and the Invidia. If you have test pipes Nismo is going to get on your nerves, it has a really high pitch to it. HKS True Dual custom with Canisters way to ricey you might as well drive a Honda and dont forget to make a hole in your exhaust but for some reason my top end was amazing and no mid range torque what so ever. Then My all time favourite was the Greddy Evo-II, now with this exhaust I actually put down the most power on the dyno, best VQ sound and its just a little louder than a stock Z. The most power you will gain with an NA motor is Single exit exhaust trust me. The Mid range torque is amazing too, But there is nothing louder than a Z with a Single exhaust, Test pipes and Headers. I would go for the Evo-II no doubt.

sorry i should have mentioned that the prices i was given was in canadian dollars

thanks ZULATER06....was a really great post, i would have to say you have the most experience with exhausts i have seen so far, and appreciate the input you have given,

I dont have an example with Z's at the moment... I really dont care that much. But first of all hes not going to make 700hp... second of all take a look at Darrin @ Titan Motorsports. He was making 700- 800+ on a 3" single.
Dont try to take what I say and exaggerate it.
^+1 You can't say 2X2.5=5!!!!!! GEEZZZZZZZZZ I love the internet.
VELOCITY is key. If you can get it from a good designed single 3" then why not. If your point was true then lets have a true quad exhaust or something like that. Please tell me you were kidding right?

Its basic math
Duals + X pipe = keep velocity up
How many V8's run single exhausts if they out flow duals?
As I suspected not even ONE dyno to support any claims made in posts......butt dynos are great
Cost and weight is a plus with a single not overall flow....I guess AAM makes a dual 3" setup for no reason
The flagship of the AAM 3” exhaust line, the AAM Spec 3” MaxFlow True Dual Exhaust System is the highest flowing exhaust available for the 350Z & G35. Designed to support the most demanding volume and velocity flow requirements, the AAM Spec 3” MaxFlow True Dual exhaust system is a perfect match for any Turbocharged 350Z, including 800rwhp+ competition setups.
Funny, they dont mention the single as their "flagship" even though supposedly it outflows the duals
I would look into Fast Intentions custom exhaust system before you pick here is a link https://my350z.com/forum/showthread.php?t=248510
Its 2 1/2 inch true dual that has a really good power gains and almost sound like stock. Also look into stillen dual exhaust. Good luck.
