Default Throttle body spacer for 350Z

Has anyone experimented with a throttle body spacer on their Z/G? I see these things advertised all the time on Ebay and elsewhere.

That was sort of my gut feeling on that. Good to know that I wasn't alone.

I found a posting on Zcar.com where someone had installed one and dynoed their car before and after. They actually lost WHP and torque after the install!!!

We offer the AAM throttle body spacer.

http://z1auto.com/prodmore.asp?model...ke&prodid=2413

Here is the item description from both our website and AAMs:

The AAM Spec. Throttle Body Spacer is a great addition to any upgraded 350Z or G35. Each AAM Spec. Throttle Body Spacer comes pre-tapped with three vacuum ports. This saves both time and money when running vacuum lines (no need to tap the factory intake plenum with this spacer). Because you have more vacuum ports available you can run components seperately (ie. map sensor, boost gauge, fuel pressure regulator, boost controller, etc.) which improves both their performance and reliability. This will fit any VQ35DE engine (350Z, G35, Maxima, Altima).
So as you can see this product really isn't designed to provide and performance gains its merely a convenience item which allows you run more components separately.

What about something like this. While it isnt specific to the 350z he might be able to make some.On the maxima its 10hp and 12 tq. Decrease in manifold temp by 40 degrees.Prevent heat from transferring from your heads to intake manifold and throttle body!

Improve Airflow by eliminating the need for intake gaskets!

Each spacer is CNC Machined to the highest tolerances to ensure the best airflow possible!

In theory, phenolic gaskets should help prevent heat transfer to the manifold and surrounding parts from the block. How much does it help? Not much probably. You have to remember that even though you may insulate the manifold from the rest of the block, the manifold will still absorb lots of heat from the rest of the engine bay. You can't isolate the manifold from the surrounding air

I conducted an experiment with my old Subaru a few years back where I installed phenolic gaskets and did a throttle body coolant bypass. I recorded an average of 12F difference in my IATs. Obviously, each car is different so results will vary. 12F in IATs will not be noticeable on your butt dyno.

Tony from Motordyne offers pretty much the same exact things for our cars...

Iso Thermal and Copper Iso Thermal:

Iso Thermal and Copper Iso Thermal upgrades reduce heat transfer to substantially reduce upper and lower plenum temperatures. Cooler intake air temperatures increase air density and reduces the tendency for detonation or ping.

1) The first component is an Aramid thermal isolating gasket that is installed between the lower plenum and intake manifold. By installing a Motordyne Iso thermal Aramid gasket between the intake manifold and lower plenum, the heat soak is significantly reduced.

2) The second component is the throttle body Coolant Control Valve (CCV). The CCV allows you to selectively heat (or not heat) the plenum assembly. With local weather temperatures below 55'F the valve is left open. In warmer weather the valve can be closed for maximum thermal benefits.

3) The third thermal management component is the Iso Thermal plenum internal supports. The plenum internal supports are self retaining and self sealing. In addition to providing sealing and support, the internal supports are thermally non-conductive to effectively shut down heat transfer through the six plenum internal posts.

4) The fourth thermal management component is the Copper Throttle Body heater. Copper Iso Thermal is a premium set and forget component that can be used in place of the Coolant Control Valve (CCV). It doesn't matter how hot or cold the weather is, you don't have to adjust a valve based on the season or ambient temperatures. Install it and the throttle body remains heated while the plenum continues to remain thermally isolated. Keeping the throttle body heated prevents ice formation on the throttle body butterfly valve when driving in cold weather. If it snows or gets really cold in your area, use the Copper Iso Thermal so your engine can take full advantage of the cold air you are driving in.

I am about to buy the plenum spacer and cold air induction for my automatic trans 2004 350z. I was wanting some feedback about if it is worth it for an auto. I know most of these gains are supposed to be at high RPM which would seem to benefit a 6spd more. If you have upgraded your automatic Z let me know what kind of performance increase you have seen and is it worth it

Flame on

motor is the same whether its a manual transmission or an auto...not sure why you think a motor mod would benefit a 6spd car, and not a auto.

here's the low down.
CAI - noise maker, nothing more
Plenum spacer - good mod, for both 6spd and auto

Try swapping out the auto for a manual first bud...

With the rate of inflation in the last two years, you may want to make it 17 cents.

Just sayin'
