Default Installed: Motordyne Shockwave TDX V2 Exhaust

The Background:

After much deliberation and funds-shifting, I decided to part ways with my Stillen True Dual system and buy the new Motordyne Shockwave TDX (v2). It wasn't that the Stillen was bad, by any means - it actually sounded pretty great with my ART Pipes. However, I simply fell in love with the Motordyne Shockwave after hearing it in person. That, and I've always been a fan of more power.

My Car:

2006 350Z (6MT)
- K&N Drop In Filter
- Motordyne 5/16" Isothermal Spacer
- Motordyne MREV2
- Motordyne ART Pipes
- Motordyne Shockwave TDX V2 Exhaust
- Uprev Tuned

Installation:

The installation was done by Chris at Failsafe Performance here in Tulsa, and he did a great job. Some people have voiced concerns over the clearance between the muffler and the ground as well as between the piping and the rear sway bar. However, everything lined up perfectly without any clearance issues whatsoever. The strut bar was cleared with adequate space to avoid any problems, and the new muffler location (thanks to the TDX midpipe) places it well out of harms way. Everything fit perfectly. Mad props to Chris for the perfect installation as well as Motordyne for the excellent design.

The Performance:

Funds and time were both tight, so I wasn't able to get a proper before/after dyno this time around. However, I do have a "before" dyno from about a month ago, so I'll get an "after" dyno in the near future and post up the comparison as soon as I get the results. For now, though, the butt dyno is registering a substantial gain. In one of the clips in the video below, I spun through substantially more of 2nd gear than I did before. I also hit my self-imposed 100mph speed limiter heading up the onramp last night - substantially faster than what I would normally reach. So all signs are pointing to a noticeable gain over a fairly well-respected Stillen true dual exhaust. Again, apologies for not having quantified results or dyno charts to throw at you.

The Sound:

The sound absolutely blew my mind. It's like my car stole the soundtrack from a $200K exotic. It's just an entirely unique sound that has already turned dozens of heads. And not because it's terribly loud, because it isn't. It's outrageously deep. This is both a blessing and a curse. Blessing if you hear it in person, because it's simply glorious. Curse if you're me, trying to capture it on video, because my camera simply fails at getting the full range of the sound. So while it's extremely deep, and strikingly loud at WOT, it's neither obnoxious nor ear-piercing. Having directly compared my TDX V2 + ART Pipes to a Shockwave V1 + Test Pipes, I can tell you it's significantly quieter, though the note it strikes is not very different.

Between the V2 axle-back section and the ART Pipes, there is zero drone. In fact, the exhaust note is quite tame at idle and just growls at low rpms. Perhaps it's the TDX itself, or perhaps it's my personal setup, but the note is incredibly pure. It's almost musical, especially at high RPMs, where it just screams. For anyone who has had the privilege of hearing a Motordyne exhaust, you know the sound I'm talking about. There is nothing else on the road that sounds like this.

Okay, I'll stop blabbering now and just show the video. Words can only do so much to describe it. Besides, I know 50% of the people who clicked on this thread did so for the sole purpose of seeing and hearing the new setup. So without further adieu...

The Verdict:

I just spent over $1600... and you know what? It was worth every penny.

hmm do you think chris would have a better mic so that we can hear it better? Also, i believe you when you say the camera doesnt do it justice. So the $1600 is for the art pipes and v2 exhaust? Or did i miss something?

I have the full 3inch true dual version (although there is an x-pipe) on my stock block HR TT. It has 2 3in. inlets to the x-pipe/resonator and 2 outlets with the 3inch piping all the way back.

I should be posting a review with dynos, pictures and vids sometime later today.

Thanks for the comments so far, guys

@ terrasmak: I might consider the diff cover (which does look badass) sometime after I pay to get the "after" dynos. I don't know how soon that will be, though, as the guy who was going to buy my Stillen exhaust decided to randomly back out literally as I was having it taken off.

@ Get_Zwole: I don't get to go to many of the meets, but there's a Caffeine and Gasoline meet coming up this Saturday here in town, and I'll probably make it to that.
