Default Recall coming soon...doors/dead battery

Maybe old news....but I just spoke with my dealership and it appears there will be a recall coming soon due to the inability of being able to get out of the car if your battery dies. Yep, thats correct, if you are in your car and battery dies, the doors won't open because the window can do its partial roll-down. The ony way out, as explained by my dealer was to pull the manual hatch latch under the rear brace and then climb out. This is a huge liability and would most definetly require a big recall. Not sure what their solution is going to be for this one.

The door still opens without the battery. The window just stays in the up position. They had a car in the Blackhawk museum. They disconnected the battery for insurance purposes. We got in and out of the car all afternoon with no problems.

Yeah, you can tape up the door sensor as many have done while getting windows tinted, and still open the door fine.

My windows were frozen this morning and I had no problem opening the door or closing it. The window did not hit the roof as some people have guessed. Once I got to work and the car was warmed up the widows went up and down.

Must be some other problem that the recall is really meant to fix. Any guesses?

Or, if they are like the dealership I've dealt with, they are starved for information from NNA and run on rumors about the Z.

I am pretty sure you can get out, if you needed to, you just might damage the car.

if nothing else, the glass would snap like a toothpick. but naw, the door opens, you wouldnt get the best seal, and you might eventually mess something up, but it would work once atleast.

there would be no warrent for a recall anyway, no safety hazard that could cause lawsuits out weighing the cost of the recall.

NEVER believe anything the dealer says unless they show proof.

Trust me, I usually take everything from the dealer with a grain of salt. The only reason I mention this was because it was from a guy at the dealership that in the past has really known his stuff. I don't mind being wrong on this, I hope for no recalls unless there warranted.

I was at the dealer the other day and the salesman was showing me around a new '03 Brickyard. The first time he opened/closed the door the window didn't move at all. Nothing bad happened and the next time he opened the door the window went down/up.

Default Strange, I don't mind recalls...

to me it means they recognize something is wrong and will fix it, which is their duty.

I work in software support and people sometimes get upset about patches. Hey, I am fixing our bugs, so yeah, I don't want bugs, but I rather get a patch than no fix at all, no?

They just send a recall for my son's Focus. Batery cables routed improperly and rear wheel bearing seals failing, Will replace both, which is good. We didn't notice a problem, but will have it taken care off anyway.

On a related note, is the integrity of the window really threatened if the door is closed while the the window is up, which would occur if the battery were dead?

The implication is that the seal is so tight that pressure against a closed window actually might damage the lift mechanism.

I think it works this way: When the door is closed, the window tucks under the upper lip of the door jam. If the battery dies then the window will not automatically lower the 1/2 inch necessary to clear the lip. Something has to give either the window or the lip will be damaged if the door is forced open.
I also have wondered whether I could actually get out of the car through the window in an emergency, and I'm not that overweight.

Have been going over this in another post. I thought that you couldn't open the door with the windows up. Other people are saying that you can do it no problem? WTF which is it? Do the windows going up and down do anything at all?

Cool

If you are real intersted you could disconnect the battery and carefully try to open the door.

It can be done easily. Just be careful and open it slowly.

Default window sensor?

[QUOTE]Yeah, you can tape up the door sensor as many have done while getting windows tinted, and still open the door fine.

Could someone tell where this sensor is located?

In the "doorjamb" area. If you are sitting in the drivers seat (with the door opened), reach down and behind you with your left hand and you'll see this little rubber nub. Push it in and your window will go the rest of the way up (assuming it went down a little when you opened the door).

After inspecting the car, it looks to me like you would be able to open the door fine since the window would just bend "in" a bit more and clear the lip. In fact, I doubt the window goes down before the lip is cleared anyway, since you have to open the door some distance before the switch is released and makes the window go down.

However, when you close the door, I can see a proplem occurring. Now the window will need to flex in the opposite direction (out away from the car), and it will not simply tuck back in under the lip. I doubt the window track is stiff enough to cause the window to break (not sure though), but I wouldn't be surprised if it damages the track and the paint on the edge of the lip.
