Default clacking sound at cold start up

I get the dreadful clacking sound at the first crack of start up. Is it the oil filter not doing its job or is my oil too thick for the car?

Thanks

I have the same problem, has happened twice. Sounds like something grinding with the flywheel or something.

i think there was a thread about this a week or so ago. From the information i have gathered it has to do with the timing chain chattering on a cold start up do to the lack of oil circulation. The chain is pressurized, and it takes a little to long sometimes for the oil to reach the top of the block. If you search, you can probably find a few different opinions. (i know of Altima's and Maxima's that do this also, i think its a Nissan mishap)

Are you usinf a genuine Nissan OEM oil filter? We found that aftermarket ones tended to allow the oil to blewed out of the timing components. An OEM one helped the issue. Also look into the timing chain tension.

Nothing but OEM filters here, problem occurs every now and then. Weird.

What we found was that NON OEM filters, some not all, allowed the oil to drain back out of the timing gears and tensioners while the car sat. The car would clack until oil pressure rose, like 2-3 seconds on ccasion. We used an OEM oil filter, never did it again. But we also switched over to 10-60 oil at the same time.

This is good info guys, mine has been doing this for awhile, everytime I start up though. I have aftermarket oil filter, not even sure what oil I have in at the moment, GTM did an oil change for me while the car was with them so not sure what I have. Actually they could have replaced the filter as well. I'll have to check tomorrow.

thats funny, because when i switched over to K&N Oil filters, i thought the clanking stopped on my car. Also switched oils from Valvoline to RP. Might just be my imagination though.

I have everything oem and still have the noise at start up. Not sure to be worried or not. It only happens if the car hasnt been driven for a while.

Sound like a faulty timing chain tensioner or cam gear. i would take it back to Nissan and have them fix it. Clacking anytime on a motor is never good.
