Default 06' Oil Consumption - Is this common?

I'm relatively new to the forum and have an '06 MT with approx. 24,000 KM on it. I bought it new in March of '06. In the last month I've been reading a bit about the oil consumption issues with the 06's. Currently my car is in storage but I have a few questions in regards to this issue of excessive oil consumpton.

1. Aside from checking your oil regularly are their and other symptons/signs of excessive oil consumption?

2. What percentage of the '06 models have this problem - is this fairly common?

3. Is this only prevalent in US models or has this been just as common with Canadian models?

4. I'm due for my next service in late March. Can I have my dealers service department perform a test to check for this issue?

Sorry if these questions are repetitve and thanks for any advice on this issue.

My 06 seems to be fine. At most it burns a half quart every 4000 miles.

This problem is somewhat common, I don't know stats. My car is also in storage, but I have a feeling that it is consuming oil.

Any of my fellow Canadians have an oil consumption issue with their 05-06models?

This problem is really common actually. Ive seen it in many 06, and mines an 05 and burned 5 qts in 3k miles. it was really bad. They replaced my motor under warranty. At first they put me on oil consumption testing were you bring it in every 500 miles and the record how much oil is gone, if its bad they will replaced things. Have them do this for you!

Thanks LH for your response.

I don't have an oil consumption issue with my 06 - at least none that I'm aware of. Honestly I have not checked my oil frequently till I read about this issue on the forum. I normally check once every few weeks and the oil has always been at the appropriate level. The issue has me concerned because it seems to be very common with the 06's.

Any oil consumption symptons that you noticed? Or are you just hit with a low engine oil light?

I usually check my oil, im a certified technician for BMW. Just a habbit. I did notice it getting low, but slowly around 5k at first. Did an oil change, after going to the drag strip, my friend said i was smokin slightly the whole way down. I realized then that i was burning it. But still didnt think that it was much, but then at around 3k on the next change i was in the mountains doing a 3 hour cruise and hauling *** around turns caused the oil light to flicker. Then the next day it stayed on. I was like WTF! so i filled it with 2 qts and it didnt even get to the empty line on the stick. Then week later it burned through THOSE 2QTS AGAIN! lol. so then i went to the dealer. New motor is great though!

Please check the revup oil consumption sticky thread in the Engine forum. It has all the info you could want and more.

The oil consumption problem you're speaking of is limited to two models: the '06 MT, and the 35th anniversary MT.

Signs you are consuming oil

- Lower oil on dipstick (check after car sits for an hour)
- Lower oil pressure (usually only starts showing when car is VERY low)
- "Soot" on the bottom of the exhaust tips.
- In extreme circumstances, loud valve ticking (shut off car and fill with oil immediately)
