Damn, I just started to get the samd freaking thing. It happens especially when its cold, like the synchros are bad or something. The guys at my dealer are a bunch of ***s, they said they never even heard of the Z tranny giving problems and there were never any revisions, Im going to try a different dealer.

03 Touring with 25000 miles, just went in today to get the oil changed and asked them to drive it...Ive had the car for 3 weeks and just noticed when shifting from 2nd to 3rd below 3500 RPM, it basically wouldnt go in gear and would make a loud *** grinding sound. Every other gear is like butter. They drove it and first thing they said to me was "We've got your transmission on order." Nice. The part number has the 9 code. I guess i didnt notice the grinding when I test drove the car because I was shifting around 5.5 or 6K RPM. Also, Im new to Arkansas, not really impressed with the state in general, and thought I was going to get some toothless ******* tell me thats how "jap-cars" run. Well I was surprised by courteous service and honesty. Im dropping the car off next week when the tranny comes in, and give you guys an update.

Just picked mine up from the dealer and wow!!! New Tranny is awesome!! I never realized how damn loud my old one was untill now. Now i can actually hear the engine/exhaust! Also the cement mixer noise is gone when in neutral now. I did however have to lower the clutch pedal as soon as i got home. With new tranny/clutch the release point was so damn high i stalled twice on the way home. Very embarassing. They told me i basically had a 50/50 mix of shavings and fluid in my tranny! WOW! Only had 32,000 miles on her.

03, 32k miles, 10/11/06
Well, sign me up for the club.. im also starting to see a trend here with these tranny replacements:

1. A lot of 03's
2. a lot of them around the 30k mile mark
3. a lot of warning signs are issues with 3rd gear

and well, yep, that's me.. grinding like hell 3rd gear (had friends telling me i didnt know how to drive, etc etc) and yep, now its getting replaced..

LUCKILY my dealer (Harte Nissan in Hartford,CT) has a tranny in stock (the 009 one even!) and i'll have it back tomorrow afternoon.. pretty quick turnaround... couple quick questions

1. is my clutch probably messed up now?
2. what IS the proper breakin for a new tranny?

They are supposed to replace your clutch on the first new tranny under warranty. That was from the dealer. Just the clutch disk, but hey it's something for nothing! They told me no break in period, but i didn't want to have to come back again, so luckily i was going on a road trip the day after i got her back. I drove a lil over 500 miles to my brothers. The clutch felt like it was slipping bad going into fist gear, and sometimes when i would downshift on the interstate to pass, i was pretty upset!! Then once i got there we took the Z out and drove her pretty hard, and it seemed to "seat" (For lack of better terms) the new clutch disk into the old flywheel. And the rest has been smooth sailing!! 009 is great!! Like a new car!! I'm not suggesting you beat the new clutch and tranny into submission, but expect it to slip because of the old flywheel, untill everything starts to mate up well again. And probably want to change the fluid i'd imagine after a couple thousand miles, to get out any break in shavings. USE GL-4 fluid, not GL-5 like my dumb *** did!! (see other posts) Good luck and enjoy!!

okay, so i just got the car back.. all in all an amazing experience.. for starters i was able to bring the car in and had it back, new tranny/clutch in just over 24 hours... i guess they replaced the tranny AND clutch assembly... i asked them what was wrong with the tranny, what was wrong with it.. they told me they were able to reproduce my problem, then found all kinds of metal in the gear oil and that was that.. At that point they send the tranny back to nissan and pop the new one in there.

Anyway, it feels like a totally different car.. the clutch feels a LOT lighter, the throws much easier.. feels a lot more like an s2000 tranny than the 03 350z one i had!! anyway, im pretty damn happy with the whole experience.. i was expecting some type of thing to go wrong.. either them not having the part, not wanting to replace it, not replacing the clutch, SOMETHING.. anyway, thanks nissan!

UPDATE
The dealership ordered the tranny a week ago, they got it yesterday, dropped my car off this morning at 10am, they gave me a dodge ram 1500 quad cab as my loaner vehicle for free. I stopped by after work at 5pm to grab my house key off the key chain that I left there, and they told me they had just finished. Damn, that was pretty fast. Overall great service from Northpoint Nissan in North Little Rock.
IMPRESSIONS
its a new 06 tranny, and the clutch is lighter, which i dont really like. I enjoyed the heavier cluch, it felt sportier and i guess it just gave a more positive feeling. I dont have the 3rd gear grind anymore, and I didnt drive it enough to tell if it shifts any better than the last transmission. Ill keep you guys posted if anything else develops.

ya, my sentiments are the same.. the heavier clutch definitely felt a little sporty.. this one is a breeze to drive... ah well, just get an aftermarket one for the more "sporty" feel i guess right?
