Default Engine light on after only 5,000 miles

I have a 2008 Z that just turned over 5,000 miles and the engine light came on over the weekend. I really don't drive it that hard so I can't imagine what it might be.

Before I take it into the shop and drop some serious cash I was wondering if any of you guys might have a clue as to what's going on with her.

Is this common? Anything I can look for?

Thanks!

It can be a number of reasons why the light came on. Too many to list. Why not just bring it into the dealership? Should be covered under warranty.

Good point. However, I'm not in Dallas where I bought the car, I'm in Houston. Should that matter?

My dealer was Baker Jackson Nissan South. I brought my car in there for a warranty fix and they are pretty good about it from my experience. My first engine light came on when I had a cat converter issue.

Great info.! I'll take it in asap.

Any idea on what might be causing the light to come on so quickly?

Thanks

Yeah, I changed the oil with synthetic at 3,000 miles. I also checked the gas cap so I know it's not a pressure issue unless the cap is faulty.

Strange.
