I was a block from my job and all of a sudden I have crazy play in the shifter and it acts as if thete ate no gates to shift through I towed it to the stealership and they charged me 140 just to rr attach it.. They said they have never had hat problem with a z before. I stumble upon this fourm just to find out they full of sh**

If your car was purchased used, it's a good indicator that the stock lever was removed at one point in time. Good thing is it's easy to check before there is a problem - so get in there, use a bit of thread lock, tighten it down, and you'll be good to go

Wow! this is crazy! Glad it turned out to be just a bolt, but since this has happened more than once, maybe we should make this a sticky??? Is this happening to a specific model year, or is it random? i may take mine apart and reinstall with threadlocker this weekend. I'd hate to be caught somewhere and have this happen.

Vote for sticky, yay, or nay??

Here are the Shifter assembly pages out of my '03-'05 manual. It shows the removal and installation of the shift lever, and of course the suspect bolt!
