Default *sigh* Can't remove oil filter

I put the OEM replacement oil filter on by hand last time but now I can't even get it off. I don't have an oil wrench and the oil is already drained from the car so I can't drive to the store. Any advice or tips? From under the car laying on my back which direction should I be turning the filter? I don't want to be tightening it up instead of loosening it.

It would come off the same way a cap of a 2-liter bottle would screw off if it had the same orientation.

Chances are you're tightening it. Usually they aren't on there too tight.

You can try using a big pair of pliars, or if you want to get barbaric on that bastard drill a hole through it and insert a screwdriver, then turn.

Lefty loosey, righty tighty...come on now lol

You should always have a filter wrench to give it a snug after hand tightening it.

Just punch a screwdriver through it and use it as leverage.
Worked for me when I did my oil change for the first time...
Never happened again.

I've done the screwdriver trick before, works great, but it's messy.

Now I only use K&N oil filters, and there's a nut on the bottom of the filter for easy removal.

Are your hands slipping on the filter or is it really on that tight?

Anyways get somebody to take you to buy the tool wrench if you don't want to make a mess.

I like those Fram tough guard ones. They have this griptape like cap on the end to make it easier to remove.

Thanks guys I managed to get it off. After I got my hand and the filter as clean as I could I managed to get a tight enough grip to get it off. Never again will I over tighten my oil filter lol.

You can also try sandpaper to get a bit more grip, but it didn't work when I tried that.

The fix is easy...

Get yourself an oil filter wrench with the teeth on them like this, they are only a few bucks and they will get even the most stubborn oil filters.

You can also get those plastic grip thing. It looks like a rubber belt and a hard plastic stick. Just do that and turn. Also useful for opening right bottles and cans.

If you've used both, you know those things suck.
