Fuel guage fluctuation
Hey so iv done a bunch of research and I found 1 fix that didnt work I cleaned the contacts on both my fuel level arm and no luck , I'll be driving and I'll have a full tank 10 minutes later I'll have half then full then empty , when it does get to empty I fill it up and it only takes 6 gals or so , any ideas on what the problem would be , I'm going to take a long road trip soon and I need to know my fuel level
Sometimes when I do about an hours worth of driving itll be showing the low gas light I park comeback the next day and drive with it slowly going from half back to e again, only to fil it up and it takes 6 gallons
There are 2 fuel sending units, both found within the gas tank. You can access them from the glovebox and from the Bose sub cubby behind the driver seat. Each sending unit controls half of the fuel gauge. If you want a surefire way to fix the gauge, you replace both units. Cleaning the contacts has proven to be a temporary fix and the problem will return within a year. If you are scared you are going to run out of gas on your long trip, reset the trip meter and start thinking about gas around 300 miles

Full, to half tank, back to empty and then when he fills up it only needs 6 gallons. The float mechanism is flaking out on him, the tank was always low 6 gallons no matter what the gauge said / he didn't burn 6 gallons in 10 minutes. Re-read it 10 times slowly and report back.

The venting system can cause the problem the OP describes. The valve is stuck or there can be debris in the vent lines. The pressure builds in the tank and you cannot fill from a gas pump. That pressure in the tank can also mess up readings from the fuel sensors causing the gas gauge to display inaccurate fuel levels.

I clean the vent lines by taking the car to a mechanic.
The link I posted does have a description of diagnosing and managing the problem, but it appears you need specialized equipment. I suppose you can clean the vent lines by locating the cannister, disconnecting the lines and cleaning the inside.
