Default Mid-A Detailing Day

Hey all,
I'm hosting a detailing day at my house in Sterling on June 12th. We'll have one, possibly two Porter-Cable orbital buffers, a hose (maybe 2), wash buckets, etc. Mike (our local Meguiars sponsored member) will be here helping with detailing (if you haven't seen Mike's paint, you need to). If you're a dedicated Zaino-ist, bring your own polish, detailing sprays, etc., and if you use Meguiars and have your own, bring that too. I've got room for one in the garage, two in the driveway, two or 3 curbside (depending on how creative we get, and I live in a Cul-de-sac, so we can be a little liberal with parking if necessary. I have a 10'x10' canopy that a car can go under to get out of direct sun during polish application.

We'll provide Sodas. BYOB. If people are interested, we can throw some dogs or burgers on the grill and make it a generally relaxing day. Once we're all good and wiped out, if people want to stay, we can crank up a flick on the 94" front projection wall-screen.

What I need from you:

1. If you're coming, your name:
2. Preference of Soda
3. Food choice: Burgers, dogs, both

So far, the attendees are:

Mike
Jess (hopefully)
Brett
Juan
Kelly

Name: Jason
Drink: Beer or Diet coke w/ lime
Food: burgers

Oh and if there is room my roomate may come along. He's got an 04 VW R32

I've got some mischief DVD's laying around and could probably acquire a bunch of other car related DVD's if necessary.

The event will be BYOB, but we can scare up some Diet Coke.

As for your friend....parking is somewhat limited, and I'd kinda like to save space for fellow 350 / G35 guys, (and I really don't want to **** of the neighbors) but I don't want to discourage you from coming either. Maybe you can bring him shotgun in your car and he can help with the detailing of your car.

Still not sure if I can make that date or not but I can drop off my buffer at some point before the event.

By the way what time were you planning on getting started?

no problem, let me know when it gets closer if there is room. Otherwise, don't worry about it... lucky bastard has almost perfect paint anyhow

Not sure about the starter kits exactly, but here's what you need to buy:

If you have moderate to severe swirl marks...Buy a bottle of Z5, which is a "thicker" polymer to fill the swirl marks (micro-scratches). Then you need a bottle of Z2 for a finer finish and additional surface smoothing. You'll need a bottle of Z7 carwash to wash the car with, and a bottle of Z8 detailer spray to bring out the shine. If your car has never been claybarred and you really want to start from scratch, I have Dawn detergent to do a base wash, then you'll need to either order a claybar from Zaino, or do what I did and spend the $14 on the Mother's claybar at your local auto shop. For the Z5/Z2, you want to make sure you buy the ZFx Accelerant to help speed the curing process of the polymer, otherwise it takes too long for the stuff to dry, especially in cool temperatures.

If your paint is in decent shape, you can probably skip the Z5 and double up on the Z2 for "maintenance" of your finish, along with all of the other products...The car wash, the detail spray, etc.

Also, I get my polishing towels from www.dftowel.com. Their Alpine microfiber towels are the best polishing towels on the market. They aren't good for drying though, so I use a different, less absorbent MF towel, or you could get a waffle-weave towel like Dr. Bonz uses.

I've never done the polish thing on a car before, so I can't comment there, but the above should get you a good start on the Zaino train. They have applicators and such on the Zaino site as well, but I think those are really DFtowel products.

Hope this helps.

Probably not until around 11:30-ish. Don't want to drag anyone out of bed too early (and I know Sterling is a little bit of a drive for some folks.)

Directions to the house

From MD: Take 495 to 193/Georgetown Pike. GT Pike T's at Rte7 (and it's a great drive, too). Take Rte7 West a few miles up to Countryside Blvd (You will cross FFX county pkwy, Cascades pkwy and pass a strip mall with a Borders books etc on your right and there is a car wash just before the intersection. If you hit Rte28, you've gone too far by about 1/2 mile.) Take a right at Countryside Blvd. See Residential Directions below for remainder of directions

From Points south:

1. You can take FFX Parkway north to Rte7, Take Rte7 West a few miles up to Countryside Blvd (You will cross FFX county pkwy, Cascades pkwy and pass a strip mall with a Borders books etc on your right and there is a car wash just before the intersection. If you hit Rte28, you've gone too far by about 1/2 mile.) Take a right at Countryside Blvd. See Residential Directions below for remainder of directions.

2. You can come out the Dulles Toll Road ( Portions Toll) to FFX Parkway or to Rte 28 (see Rte 28 directions below)

3. You can come up Rte28 past Dulles airport 5 miles to Rte7 EAST, then take a LEFT on Countryside BLVD. See Residential Directions below for remainder of directions

From points West:
Hell, nobody lives west of Sterling.

RESIDENTIAL DIRECTIONS

Countryside Blvd T's at Algonkian parkway. Take a right on Algonkian Parkway. Take your second left on McPherson (The first left is McPherson also, it's a loop, so don't let it fool you). Take your 3rd right onto McCarty, and your first right onto Darian. We're up at the end of the cul-de-sac on the left side. House #13. It's a kid-filled neighborhood with blind spots due to street parking so please keep your speed down.

The house # is 703.444.2631 if you get lost.

Brett!!! Glad you're comin' out dude. I personally will not be taking the PC to my car. Just no need for it yet. If a nice process of Z5/Z2 doesn't fix the swirls on my hood, I might go there, but I'm not going to do it yet.

I'm not going to Dawn or claybar this go 'round either. 7500 miles, 16 months in the garage and 8 coats of Zaino since I last claybarred. I doubt it would do much good.

As for the Turbonetics, I'm not sure if it will be in yet or not. It's not here yet, and I don't know how scheduling will work out with Ultimate Performance. It's entirely possible that my car will be in the shop during detail day, which is fine. More room for everyone else (and hangin' around your cars will help to ease the separation anxiety. )

I would go, but I need to get my body kit painted and installed, and the hole in my front bumper repaired. Until then, I'm not doing anything other than washing my car with soap and water!

But If I can get all of the above done before the 12th, I will definately be there.

Zaino newbie here, but why don't you just order from the website? Is it because of shipping cost?

Brett or Kelly, I plan on getting the Zaino Total Protection Show Car Kit. It looks to have everything I would need. Is it worth it? I want to start from scratch that day, washing with Dawn and then claybarring. And then I can use my brand new DF Towel wax applicator and buffing pad .

LOL, my friends moved to South Riding a couple of months ago, which I believe is tad west and south of Sterling. It's not a bad drive from where I live, but damn that town is on the edge of Boonnies.

hey jess,

a member on this forum prompted me to purchase zaino from a person in our region who is a zaino reseller so basically you pay about the same from what I understand minus the shipping!! And we all know how we hate to wait for things we order in the mail!!

The kit is a decent deal, I would recomend going that route, that is how Zaino got their hooks in me . I order from the website, it is only 5 bucks i think, but if you can a local dealer probably could take care of you quicker. Either way it is good stuff. If you order could you oder me a thing of Z-8, I can get you back at Kelly's. If you order from the website we can split the shipping or something...I want to try that stuff out.

I have done the Z5/Z2 process, even with Z-6 in between, I have claybarred, and everything, but my dealer had one of those super sweet scratch and wash for all new cars, so my car looks slightly swirly. I will see what the process looks like, and if I feel comfortable, I might give it a try, we will see. Anyways, sounds like fun...see everyone next weekend.

You can actually glaze your fresh paint.. I would not wax the body kit yet.
