i built the motor
yes i put all new oem tensioners on
all of the lifters were within factory specs (i had to change 2 out)
ive changed my oil 2x so far and only have 1200 miles or so on the engine
hop is mexican
and the vid was in the 70s, but it was humid as hell and obviously had rained over night. its a condensation type of smoke, doesnt smell like oil or fuel, and goes away after a couple minutes when it warms up. but i havent noticed it smoking much during cold starts so it must have been the temp/humidity of that morning.

ill try 10w-30 and see if it helps.....might do it today after work.

Dont trip too much on the condensation from cold startups mine is pretty much the same. I waited about 3k to switch over to synethetics to make sure I got a decent ring seal/seat with the clearences piston/ring maker suggested.

How's your oil pressure? Maybe a missed or damaged o-ring.

idk....i change these things out on a regular basis and never had a prolem due to an oil filter.
ill change the tensioner out tomorrow after work and see if that was the problem. im startin to think the noise is happening from me having the heads resurfaced.....

Did you get head gaskets that accounted for the amount of material that was removed?

when you take off the access cover for the main timing chain cover, which way is the little tab pointing? I am pretty sure it needs to be pointing up, if it isn't it won't be working right

right now i have cheap advance auto 5w-30 conventional oil and a oem nissan filter. will try some name brand 10w-30 and a wix filter shortly to see if the thicker oil will help. gonna wait til i hit near 3k miles before i switch to synthetic oil tho.

that sounds bad, almost like a fan hitting something, but obviously thats not it. idk man

sorry e30, did not mean to make it sound like i was bein an ***. just sayin i've repeated everything i have installed more than once im sure and i have nothing special or custom made in this build. i sowwys. forgive?

yeah, it sounds not so delightful. the 10w30 didnt help much. there is very minimal lifter noise and that is not what i am referring to. the vid makes it sound worse than it really is....im just talking about the first initial start and rattle noise for a second or two.

on the other hand, i just put in the new tensioner. idk if this was causing the problem but the spring lock part was broken. i had to push the tab down twice the amount plus some to get the lock to open so i could push the plunger back in. did a lil rattle when i started it back up but thats with a new tensioner. we will see in a couple hours

and ill have pix of the old and new tensioners to show what im talking about, but im at the shop right now so no can do pix right naowww k? k. bye guyz

Nothing to forgive, I was just asking.

I remember you used an HR gasket but they come in differing thickness to make up for removal of material.

I hope you find your noise soon.

Factory HR headgaskets come in 1 size - you cant remove much material from either the block or heads, as nothing else would end up fitting (timing chain etc). You have a max spec each of the block and heads can be resurfaced to. Beyond that level, those repsective parts must be replaced. Same thickness as all previous DE headgaskets too

hopefully the tensioner fixes the issue

When I bought my HG I was offered differing thickness. I assumed the same was available for HR sorry.

oem headgaskets only come in one standard thickness. and from what "I" checked and measured....the HR headgaskets are thinner than the DE gaskets.

so i havent started the car up again since i put the new tensioner on, so i'll check it out tomorrow and see if that remedied my noise concern.

some pix tho.....

put on some new rubber in the rear. this time i got all matching tires 245/35 nexens.

and some custom bracing for the headers.

old tensioner...you see where the tab is way more forward than its supposed to be?

new tensioner...note tab placement

Only Cometic gaskets come in different thicknesses

OEM only come 1 way. All are the same thickness, IIRC it's .63"

I bet it was the tensioner. Good job finding it quick. From experience with vq30s I remember sometimes it takes a while for oil to fill the tensioner. Hopefully nothing else was damaged. That tensioner was really extended.
