^This. I think people that "get it" realize that certain parts see lots of stress, others don't. You can compromise in metallurgy in some places safely, where-as in other places you will break things. Certain things are very simple mechanically speaking. Metal is metal (assuming the same alloy and heat treatment), and if something is cast even just decently well, it can be cleaned up/ported to be worth-while. Sure the original might be "100 percent efficient," but at one third the price, "90 percent efficiency" is the best dollar per horsepower value... even if you have to spend some extra money in additional fabrication/modifications IMO.
It's not fun. If you have a shop do it for you, I get the point of the argument but as a DIY guy that has dealt with parts that are "99%" perfect copies and "should be just as good", I would rather give my kidney than have to deal with some of the replicas again.
I have done budget builds (namely my Lexus) and I've done high dollar builds. The Lexus by this point has just as much sunk into it trying to reengineer the replica and ebay parts I used. I personally would rather start with quality if I had to do it over again. The Lexus has been useless to me because it doesn't run long enough to be useful to me. The Z? Never meatballed, or DNF'd in my 6 years running it.
