thoughts on lake merritt?
hey all,
i know there are several east bay ppl on here. i'm moving to the east bay and found an apartment close to lake merritt (3rd ave and 12th street). it's about 2-3 blocks off the water, 10 minute walk to the bart and has covered parking. i'll have a nice view of the lake from a 9th story unit. there's absolutely nothing interesting to me around the building, so i imagine i'll have to drive to the north side of the lake where that theater is or head over to jack london sq and chinatown.
any thoughts on the area? i know oakland is a little rough on the edges but i'm hoping this area is ok...

Yeah I would say rockridge is a little better. In places like the east bay, you always have thugs walking over and causing trouble even in the nice areas.
Maybe you should get a gun and a bullet-proof vest.

I used to own a condo in the Regillus, that 1924 building on the corner of 19th and Lakeside. Thought it was cool, never really had any problems since it's right on the edge of downtown. Not many people around after 6pm. Problem is you hear about lots of problems in nearby areas spilling over. Questionalble areas really aren't that far away such as San Pablo Ave., International, and even West Oakland isn't really that far away. But if you are willing to put up with this, the lake is great. Grandlake is cool and was a regular spot weekend mornings, downtown is great - especially for Asian food, and you are just a short drive away from shopping in Emeryville. Also have a Sat morning farmers market under the 580 overpass. Only downside to Lake Merritt (at least the side I was on) was the lack of a grocery store within walking distance. Safeway is the best grocery store in that area but it's on the far side of Grandlake. Not sure if you are familiar with the area, but feel free to hit me up if you want some dining reccomendations.

Hey man, how's it going? I remember you from the G boards! Where are you moving from again? Anyway, I live literally 3 minutes away from you so I am familar with that area. I'm assuming you meant 3rd Ave and EAST 12th Street
(12th Street is in downtown Oakland). Honestly, that area is not too bad. I have driven by there numerous times on different nights and it seems to be fairly quiet. You'll be very close to all the Asian food places along E12th which is a plus
Lake Merritt is a great area, IMO, because it's central to everything. BART and public transportation is easily accessible and the Grand Ave/Lakeshore district is great for shopping/food. Chinatown is literally a 3 minute drive away and Jack London Square is just 5 minutes or so away from that. Like someone else mentioned, you're also close to that Albertson's, Walgreens, Merritt Bakery, WAMU, and Hollywood Video on E18th as well. The main freeways are very close to you as well (880 and 580, which both connect to 80 or 24 if needed). Also, the Emeryville/Emerybay shopping district (one of my favorite spots) is just a quick hop on/off the freeway. I just love the "centrality" of Lake Merritt.
How do you plan on getting to work? Drive? BART? Bus?

hey man,
i'm moving up from sunnyvale. yeah i meant E 12th over on the south/east side of the lake. it's nice that lots of stuff is available within a short drive. i like the grand ave area on the north side, but i'm still a bit concerned about the safety of the place i'm looking at. i heard gunshots aren't that uncommon (the block along 4th ave is pretty damn ghetto). there's a school off 2nd that's for delinquent students that has me worried too. i have to pass by it going to/from the lake merritt bart which is how i was planning to get to work. my new job is over in SOMA so the bart should work well. 10th goes right in front of laney college so i figured it was safe but at the ends of the street it's got some incidents of crime.
i'm hoping one of two places i'm checking out in rockridge will pan out. we should meet up sometime after i get moved in and go for a cruise or something.... my g sedan has been known to keep up with some z's

Would definitely love to go for a cruise sometime! I'm sure I'll run into you at one of the meets coming up soon anyway. I know G sedans are no slouches
I'm sure you'll be able to keep up with my Z anyway.. I only have a popcharger under the hood and a heavy sound system weighing my Z down, lol.
