It's been awhile since I've posted on any track day news, but here's the latest: First, for those who enjoyed the LaJunta track days with ridiculously low fees and high amounts of track time, cherish those memories! In a recent conversation with the City of LaJunta head of Engineering (who now controls and schedules time at LaJunta Speedway), he confirmed that any organization that wants to rent the track will have to provide their own liability insurance. After discussing what our informal group has done in the past, he was sympathetic, but said there would be no exceptions to this policy. So unfortunately, while it's currently cost and resource-prohibitive to rent LaJunta in 2007, both SCCA (coloradoscca.org) and NASA (nasarockymountain.com) have dates available at the track.
The news at Pueblo Motorsports Park (PMI) is much better. As mentioned last year, their insurance regs will require safety classes for all participants who don't already have certifications (ie. SCCA, NASA or pro driving schools) in 2007. The specifications for these classes will require a different content and focus than what we've done in any of the past HPDEs. That means that even if you've attended one of our past HPDEs at PMI or LaJunta, you'll still need to attend one of these classes to gain a PMI certification (or license) to rent in '07 and beyond.
The good news is that much of the PMI content will focus on car control and passing safety and ettiquete. While the course specs call for four hours of "classroom" content and an equal amount of track time, you can expect to see significant amounts of time on the track at speeds well above what you should be doing on the road! Even better, I'm currently working on a deal to bring a Nissan Sport Magazine-sponsored PMI class for all Nissan/Infiniti/Datsun drivers! This would include a significant discount in the cost (and no, contrary to Robert K's fears, it won't come close to $400) of the class. I've also talked with GaryM05 about coming along as as co-instructor of this event, but don't have all the details (including dates or costs) confirmed as yet. I expect to have an announcement ready in the coming weeks, however, and I'll post them here.
One final comment: Nissan Sport Magazine is committed to improving driving skills on both road and track and if this class is successful (and FUN), I hope it will serve as a blueprint for taking it to other parts of the country! So stay tuned and post any questions or comments here.

I'm interested!!! Since I am leaving the military and my 24hr on/off work week I should be able to attend more event.
As mentioned above, more notice the better. You know I keep my eyes out for track day events. Whoo-who!!! Spring/Summer racing is right around the corner!!!

Sorry to hear the official word on La Junta...we had the perfect setup there, and it's too bad to hear that those days are officially over. It was nice while it lasted, though.
Was it 3 years that we were able to take advantage of having our very own private racetrack, with no minimum car counts...for just $35 each? Good times, never to be seen again (probably ever, on any track anywhere). While I enjoy driving PMI more, I probably have more fond memories from La Junta.
Those who never came out will never know what they missed.
I'm looking forward to another event at PMI, though, and I hope we have a good turnout (especially from those who took track days for granted when they were readily available, and kept saying "I can't make this one, but I'll come to the next one for sure", as this will be the best opportunity to get certified for PMI, in my opinion.)
Edit: I just realized that this is my 1,000th post, 4 and a half years in the making. I guess it's only fitting that it comes in a track day thread!

Gary has it right; we're still in negotiations. I hope to post the final details shortly. However, as far as costs go- you will need your own helmet and I'd suggest you start shopping for a SA-rated one immediately. I'd also recommend everyone doing the stuff NOW that you might put off 'till later- in particular brake work, which tends to limit most folks fun.
