Default UTEC Timing does really weird things

I adjusted the timing today for my UTEC and went out for a run. My timing didn't go to the numbers I had set but my base timing fell 3 to 5 degrees according to my logs. Anyone have thoughts on this. I was using Cipher along with MPS_UTEC logger.

Those logs are from the Cipher util right? I've seen my stock ECU timing values fluctuate pretty significantly relative to the UTEC timing.

I'm getting ready to create a timing map myself and I'm trying to figure out why I can't get Cipher and UTEC to agree on timing when I datalog.

What program were you using to read timing? If you were using the Cipher then it won't read timing correctly. The stock ECU may be trying to pull timing because of knock.

What did the MPS logger report? What all is done to the car? How is the UTEC setup?

I believe TurboXS said that if there is a timing disceprency between UTEC and the ECU, that the UTEC values would be correct. I tend to believe this because I was tuning my UTEC timing in 1/2 degree increments last weekend and was able to fine tune it pretty reliably...

The Cipher timing / SIG column from the UTEC are the timing your stock ECU would be running if it had anything to do with timing control, which it doesn't unless you have "ECU" in the current load cell in your UTEC timing map. The timing the UTEC says it's running is what's actually getting run since it has final say in what signal gets sent to your coil packs.

I was to concerned and put in a call to Jermaine today. He said that any logs from the ECU are worthless when the UTEC is controlling the timing. MPS logger was off from the UTEC log so I guess I won't be seeing anymore pretty graphs will adjusting the timing.

That looks pretty nice, I might have to look at it further.

Why the UTEC map does not match UTEC log results
You likely had the same issue I had. Check out my post https://my350z.com/forum/tuning/249169-tracking-my-utec-tune-progress.html. On page two I detail the issue in extreme detail. On page three, I list the actual fix.

Basically the short answer has to do with cell averaging. If the values in adjacent cells don't agree closely, the average of the two can skew the numbers. Let me use an example. Lets say you tuned the 90% column, but not the 100% column because the UTEC never uses the 100% column. Now lets say at 90%/6000RPM you have 30 degrees and at 100%/6000RPM you have 22. When toward the upper end of 90%, the UTEC will average these two cells. The outcome will be 26, which is dramatically different than 30. The fix is to make sure adjacent cells, even if unused, agree with one another closely. They don't have to be exact matches, but close. This will aid the UTEC in smoothing everything out.

Why your base map fell
I have found that when you adjust the fueling or sometimes the timing, the stock ECU will freak out. It will always pull stock timing to try and adjust. Everytime I leaned out the mixture, the ECU would freak and pull timing. After a couple days of no adjustments to the UTEC, the base timing would return to normal. Again, you can see this on the first page of my thread.

Keep in mind, your results may very, but this all is based on the experience of a few people. Big shout out to Doug Stewart of Crawford for helping me identify the issue with the timing.
