I had a CCW when I lived in Vegas. Now that I am in the "People's Republic of California", forget-about-it. :\

Anyone else have comments on pepper spray? I saw the one above on cold weather.

Is a fogger better than straight spray? Is 17% better than 10%? Best brand? Etc.

What about Bear Fogger? I bet that would mess someone up pretty good.

Interesting thread everyone. As an Australian I find the idea of carrying a gun in my car incomprehensible. Here we do it the old fashioned way. If I flip someone off, the flip me off back...then we swear at each other a bit and then we go our separate ways. Occasionally you might get a fist fight.

And the socialist-type system being talked about kills me in terms of taxes. As a high-income earner I feel like I'm supporting half of Sydney's unemployed sometimes but hey - if it keeps the lazy buggers off the streets and stops me getting mugged then I won't complain.

I'm certailnly not talking down the American way of doing things - you're obviously doing a lot of things right. But the whole gun thing does mystify me a bit.

yeah, I couldn't believe you guys let the government confiscate your guns so easy. There'd be some shootouts here if they did that.

I took the CC class in NC a few years back. The guy that taught it was an attorney. He was great. Before the class, he told us to take notes and trade and copy somone else's notes. Edit the compilation and type it out then send it certified mail back to yourself. That way, when you end up shooting someone (and you're in the right b/c you knew how to defend yourself w/deadly force), you can use that document in court to prove that you fully understood the law when you killed someone while defending yourself. Although he did say that if you shoot someone that is unarmed it's likely that your attacker told you he was a black-belt in whatever, thus convincing you that your life was threatened. That was kinda hokey, but I could see some dude saying, "hey, give me your money or I'll kick your ***!" then you could ask him, "what are you a black belt or something?" then when he says, "maybe"...you shoot him. I don't know if that would hold up, but this attorney said he'll represent any of students for free if they did the right thing.

Oh yah...and I do carry a Walther P99 in .40S&W in my Z when I travel...crime or not. There are crazy people in this world and if some idiot wants to kill me for my Z or whatever, I may be pissed and give it up. But if some dude wants to do that with my family around, I may go to prison for shooting him in the face.

The Bucks County District Attorney's Office has dropped attempted murder charges against two men in connection with the fatal shooting of 19-year-old William Collins III of Bensalem.......................A shot from Balogun's 9 mm handgun struck Collins after he had smashed the windows of a car carrying Anderson, Balogun and two other people with a baseball bat, said the prosecutor..............After a complete and thorough investigation, witness statements and physical evidence concluded that Balogun shot in self-defense and his actions were justified," Zellis said.

I'm not sure about bear spray, but I bought the one from fry's electronics for $4.99 and it's has OC which causes their eyes to close and their pupils to dilate shut. It also causes their lungs to shutdown so that they can only breathe enough to stay alive, but not enough to chase you down. Also the benefit of this is that it shoots in and line and not in a fog, which decreases the chance of blow back.

Same policy in Texas. I was saying more on the lines of when I go to a friend's house or even when I leave the weapon in the car but go into a club or pool hall................ Sad to say, I drink everytime I go out so I rarely carry at night on the weekends. That's probably the time most likely to need the weapon too.

Default Deadly Force

For more informed information on gun-carry laws, go to:

www.packing.org

As for pepper spray--it's pretty good to discourage an attacking bear that you don't want to seriously injure, but using it on an aggressive human attacker just pisses them off. Bad guys are not as bright as the average bear. A few 9mm or higher caliber rounds will make a bad guy stop and sit down. It MIGHT kill them, but shooting someone does not always equate to killing them. Most shooting victims survive (mine won't).

As for pointing a gun at someone to hold them at bay--this may be the single most dangerous misconception about using a gun. Bad guys simply do not think the way rational people do, and when they are also under the influence of a foreign substance, they are completely bonkers. The sight of a gun pointed at them will have no effect other than to make them more resolved to have their way, and try to take the gun away from you to use it on YOU. NEVER point a firearm at anyone or anything that you do not intend to shoot...right then!

As for not shooting someone over a car--would you shoot someone who poked a gun in your face and made you work for them without pay for the next year or two? That's what taking your Z car amounts to. A thief isn't just taking property, he is taking the time you had to work to own that property. That's involuntary servitude (slavery), about which I feel very strongly deserves a lethal remedy.

As for flipping people off--just don't. It might be someone in a bad mood with a gun under their seat.

As for carring in your Z car--in my state a permit is required for concealed carry, which covers carrying in the car as well. When I leave the car, the pistol goes with me, so no car thief will get the pistol.

I've carried for 35 years, and having my pistol snugged into the small of my back has made it easier to back away with dignity from a few "situations." I knew that if push came to shove, the "force" was with me.

my opinion...my opinion only, you shouldnt have flipped the guy off, be the bigger man. Guns dont make you tough, they make you think your tough. Guns have got me in trouble when i was younger. If you pull a gun out, dont pull it for show, pull it out to use it. A wiseman will use his head, not a gun. Plus FYI, if you have a concealed permit, and get in a situation, you better make sure you kill that person, reason why. Police will be involved, there will be two different stories, and you can still go to jail for protecting yourself. Can you really take a mans life, and live with guilt? When you could have just ignored a moron. Going to court over something like that will be in the 15-20k range for legal fee's. Trust me, ive seen this before. I am on probation for carrying a gun, and protecting myself (long story). I should have been the bigger man that night, walked away, and stfu, but i didnt...now i have a felony on my record, once a month pee test, fee's...and alot of other B.S. Think about the whole picture before you do something you will regret your whole life

137 posts on carrying a gun in your car. Oh dear.

If so many people are carrying guns perhaps consider a bazooka or Bond-style full-automatics behind the lights; could this be the next great development in tuner/aftermarket parts?

I would only shoot someone if my life was in danger or the life of my family. If I'm being robbed by a guy with a gun or a knife then yes, I could shoot without question......if the guy has no weapon and my life isn't being threatened then I would hesitate to shoot because I'd go to prison for murder. The law dictates when I'd shoot for the most part. No doubt a robber deserves to get shot....but I'm not going to prison for that so I stick to the letter of the law which unfortunately in most westernized countries is designed to protect the criminal more than the victim.

absoluturq - if you think like that they hurt you bad. First of all, when they rob you, they go from someone walking around/bystander to all in your face and screaming in 1 second.

It's not like you can talk them out of it; they've made their mind. The only thing you can do is to hurt him to get away. If you're unwilling to do that, then you're toast.
