I think this goes beyond just buying cars for kids. I make all my kids swap their summer and winter tires and change their own oil at least once. Yup, even the girls. True, I let them use the air compressor and air wrenches, but hopefully they can all change a flat tire on their own and know at least where the oil goes into the engine!

well all you guys complaining about kids driving nice cars.. society have grown since you older folks were teens.. How many of your parents and grandparents drove cars to school? and greatgrandparents.. how many even had a bicycle? you dont see them complaining on a forum saying "MAN THESE SPOILED KIDS HAVE CARS.. WE USE TO RIDE BIKES TO SCHOOL".. so you cant "hate" teens for 1 thing they do or get.. prove a teen is a dick in many categories and I'll hate along with all you guys.. If you go to a developing country.. even China, many college students / people 40 years older who only uses a bicycle and can't afford cars.. teens driving nice cars can be a complement to our society in a way..

probably in a few hundred years.. kids are going to buy 950Z that flys to school.. and all our nice cars are gonna be like crap.

Back when our grandparents were in school, the major discipline problems were running in the hall, chewing gum in class, and not adhering to the dress code. Kids haven't evolved to be more capable of dealing with the cars, many of their parents just have less common sense for buying them one.

right.. so at that phase of time, it wasnt popular to even consider cars.. then there must be a transitional time where buying cars is meh... considerable.. but now, especially in US where alot of people CAN make big $$$, its at the phase of buying new cars.. of course, with lots of new goodies that are less common sense to buy (ie. Honda robots that can serve people...) who knows? course, this is just where my brain is taking me... not sure at all if its any valid.. i can just imagine future kids buying a new car.. along with robots that drive it.. and we (the teens most of you hate so much) will be on forums complaining that we had to drive ourselves..

LOL....well, no, not exactly. What I'm saying is that you are a young (and therefore inexperienced) driver (no offense intended, these two go hand in hand). Even if you're a perfectly responsible young man, your ability to react appropriately to certain situations with almost 300 HP at your command is not as developed as those who (like me) started off dealing with daily driving in a 97 hp VW and have 17 years of wheel time, including an HPDE school. As a parent (though my son is only 6), I have no intentions of buying my son anything performance oriented as a first car. He will learn the roads before he learns sports cars. It may just save his life. For me as a parent "I love you" means you learn to drive in a "training car", not "I know you just learned where the key goes, here's 300 HP you can kill yourself with". I could see the Z as a college graduation present because by that time, you've got 6 or 7 years under your belt.

This car is not my first vehicle. I know my parents wouldn't let me get a Z when I first got my liscense. Thats just crazy talk. But, over the past +year they have acknowledged how much I've grown up. Please, there are so many immature people in my class. (Ex. Tieing a towing rope from at truck to a tree in the school parking lot, and pulling the tree outta the ground..) My parents understand where I am at in my driving and my responsibity as a young adult. I agree that getting a first time driver a high performance vehicle is crazy, but not once they turn 18. Just my opinion.

oh, most certainly m0nkie, gotta stay safe! my first car was a 1988 maxima. it could outrun all the civics at that time that weren't SI's, so i was very delighted about that. actually i thought it was hilarious. my son will have an 88 maxima! lol

we are still more reckless and less skilled though.. that i will admit.. and pulling trees?? thats nothing.. we had a senior activity of going to mts. to grab truck loads of snow (in LA wheres its freakin hot) and dumping it all over parking lot.. and watching noob drivers go o man.. good times.. good times...

LOL...You guys need to stop insinuating that we 'hate' you teens. Not the case at all. There are very few people that I 'hate', and not one of them is a teen. Point is that in *most* cases, fast cars and inexperienced drivers is much the same as alcohol and cars....they both combine a deadly weapon and either impaired or underdeveloped judgement.

Here's something interesting for you to think about....There are scientific studies which prove that the 'hazard centers' of the brain (the parts that are responsible for assessing danger) are not fully developed in the human brain until around age 25. That said, you as a teenager are PHYSIOLOGICALLY predispositioned to have your "I could die doing this" inner voice over-ridden by the hormonal, ego-driven "Hey Dude, watch this ****" voice. Will you give in to it all the time? Nope, but some states now (Maryland is one) are imposing laws about teenagers having peers in the car with them specifically because of these facts. Now knowing this, why would I purposefully put my kid in a car where the urge to say "Hey Dude, watch this" is so strong?

Your post (while you make valid points) is a perfect example about the differing view of the world between your age group and mine. You see 1+ year of driving experience as "grown up driving", where I see it as just getting started. You've been through one, maybe two winters, limited other weather conditions, etc. And don't get me wrong, I'm NOT saying that you're not a safe driver. I just think that as a "new" driver, I want my son in something that doesn't tempt him to prove that he's as immortal as he thinks he is to his buddies.

It does feel weird, seriously. Now that I'm all of 33 (and I still play Playstation and collect model cars and stuff, so I'm a pretty "young" 33), it still strikes me as weird that I opt for doing things the safe way vs. trying to keep up with the younger guys in our club that go ***** out. The few times that I've really pushed my car (on a public road), I was so glad when it was over, I can't even tell you. But it comes on gradually, and it's not like you wake up one day and you're a chicken-****, you just evaluate the priority of doing dumb things differently.
