I think you're assuming he was completely out of gas when he filled up. Not likely. Probably didnt take 20 gallons to fill it.

i get about 30+...at 65 mph

dips to about 26 at 80 though

Mpg gauge is accurate to 2%, checked it against my scan gauge. This is a great car for a compromise between power and mpg! Would reccomend it to anybody and the price of a new one is lower than ever.

ok....you guys may beat me up over this but I baby my Z, all highway miles (work and home), set cruise control at 65 and cruise listening to music, never have run it hard (only once 125mph going to Vegas)....but my computer indicates 34-37mpg. So whats up?, is my computer bonkers or did I get a once in a life time car?

No- many of us get those kind of figures while cruising. Nissan engineers tuned the ECM to lean out the air/fuel mixture at steady highway speeds. The VQ isn't revving or carrying a heavy load at those speeds, so it gets excellent fuel mileage. But combine that with city driving with stop-and-go spurts and the mileage drops severely.
