350z or g35 coupe and depreciation
ALG recently awarded the 350z as the "sports car" with the least amount of depreciation. Yet when you go to the ALG website, the g35 is ranked higher. What gives? I'm working with a dealer on an Enthus model but a rep from my local Infinity dealer REALLY wants me to try the g35. Any input would be appreciated.

the Z would bring more money in the long run because of its namesake. the G35 outside of this circle(the people who refer to it as a skyline) is just a mid 30k's lux/sports car. the website probably ranked the G higher cause of the cost of the car a Z starts at 26k where the G is more towards 33/34k
personally i like them both almost equal.. i just like the Z a little more because if its heritage. but sometimes a G will pass me and i wish i had one.
so your good to go no matter what choice you make

If both models had the same MSRP, the G's Residual value after X years, X miles, will be higher than the Z, because it's an "infinity". (higher end model)
Lexus will depreciate less than a Toyota.
Acura less than Honda.
Infinity less than Nissan.
IMHO. I have no real proof and am too lazy to find some.

magoo: the 350z and the g35 are in different car categories. Whenever I read magazine comparos, websites, etc... the 350z is a pure sports car while the g35 is considered as a grand tourer, luxury coupe, etc... Therefore it's perfectly understandable that the 350z has the least depreciation in terms of sports cars (vs. miata, s2000, TT, etc...) but is overall beat in terms of coupes by the G35. In the end I think you should test drive the G35, just so you can make an educated purchase. I personally think that the G35 and the 350z are in two very close, yet specifically distrinct classes. As for the reasons why the g35 has a better resale value, it could be higher demand (the stats may also include sedans as well as coupes...and there are tons of demand for both vs. just the 350z), luxury brand status, reliability (i think infiniti was ranked #3 in consumer reports, while nissan was like #7 or #8...a spot below industry average)
Here are some stats:
1. Mercedes CLK
2. Mini Cooper
3. Acura NSX
4. Toyota Tacoma
5. Honda Odyssey
6. Toyota Sequoia
7. INFINITI G35
8. BMW 330 (Ha!)
9. Porsche 911 GT2
10. Nissan 350Z

Don't forget that the G has a 4yr/60,000mi warranty which should help the residual.
Production levels are running about the same. So, hard to say which one will be rarer over the long term. When it comes to specific trim levels, the 350Z Track and G 6mt are the ones hardest to find.
Inifiniti has a higher public perception of quality than Nissan. So, that's a another thing that points to the G having a higher residual.
The Z has the more on the edge styling (ie. you either love it or hate it). The G is more conservative in styling. Don't know which one will stand the test of time better.
