Default Road and Track next gen Z article

2008 Z a Complete Redesign
I wouldn't read too much in to it, but in this months Road and Track, there is a long article on the 2007 Nismo 350Z. In this article it states that Nissan is going to have a completely new, redesigned “Z Car” for the 2008 Model Year.

Interestingly, they did not specifically call it a 350Z, but simply by the Z moniker, so it may actually be the 370Z we are all wanting…

Yea, well, don't read too much into that. I work for Nissan and they had told me that the Skyline GTR was going to be a 2007 model year vehicle. So much for that.

I don't think it's possible in this day an age for an auto maker to be coming out with a car in less than years time and not have one 'spy' shot, or some concept vehicle design launch. All that hype before a car comes out is done on purpose for many reasons.

I wouldn't expect a completely new Z to come out before 2009 model year.

Nissan is not going to waste all the resources they used to make the new upgrades for the 07 and then re-do it all again for 08. IMO.

They did for '06 to some extent.. The Upgrade from '06 to '07 isn't that dramatic really, as that power-plant is and will be used in other cars. Often manufactuers release updated or special editions in the last year or two of a model to increase interest in "the old model" strong until the new ones comes out. Adding a different motor, hood and intake setup isn't all that much for something like that.

They need to make it < 3000 LBS, 350hp 300+tq rev to 8k. RWD w/LSD base model and make the suspension more hardcore.

Why? They can put the 3.7L in for probably $500. There's 330. Then if they can cut the weight down a few hundred pounds which isn't too difficult for a redesign. A stiffer suspension won't cost much more at all. That is very close in price.

I Do agree, a 3K Curb Weight would be ideal, but
The Weight reduction would have to come from more expensive materials, more aluminum and probably some carbon fiber too. Weight reduction isn't cheap for a mass-produced vehicle that must meet so many safety requirements. The other option is to cut back on features like a spare tire, stereo, AC, ABS, LSD, ETC... If they had a real "Track" Edition with just the Bare car, it would probably sell like hot-cakes.

Good points. Well then they should at the very least stiffen the suspension and put the 3.7L in there tuned to 350hp. They could still keep it under $30k

typically when do we hear what is going to be in the next years models?

I hope to be in a position to buy mid-late summer (or earlier if car fever hits me much worse than it is now)

I could wait (assuming my beater doesn't die) if there were going to be some major changes in the next years cars.

Audi dropped 200 pounds on the new TT and kept the price under $1k of the outgoing model IIRC. So, it can be done -- just a question of will they.

Considering every single time there has been a change to either the Z or the G, it has resulted in pretty drastic weight increases, Nissan clearly isn't concerned with keeping weight down

There really is no excuse, IMHO, for a two-seat sports car to weigh 3350# (which, BTW, is what the much larger, V8 Mustang GT weighs). Heck, the roadster shouldn't even weigh that much.
